When in caves or inside wrecks following the profile as dictated ... by desire to go into the inky darkness and spit the devil into the eye ... from horizontal to sideways to head down. saludos Matt |

Hi guys, Well, even my question might be a bit off topic, but is it fair for an instructor or IT to require from a student to be able demonstrate skills which are required for cave diving or wreck penetration such as perfect trimming or positioning while the student is only doing his/her Advanced Nitrox course? Best Regards. Wael

Anyone who can keep a straight face while requiring you to "assume the position" requires very careful watching - in diving as in all things. I respectfully suggest that if your deco plan requires you to lie perfectly horizontal for the entire dive then you should pitch it and replace it with one with a little more margin for error. I'm never as happy as when I'm in a wreck. There are two default states: head down a hole and head up a hole; in between, there's ungainly wriggling. There are times when the sea is alive with fish, and I often find that the best way to enjoy them is by swimming on my back and looking up. Pad your tables and enjoy the freedom: that was what you went underwater for in the first place. |

Hi guys, Since the skill relates to your ability to progress with minimum Co2 generation and aids holding stops (resistance to vertical movement through the water column).... yes. Well, even my question might be a bit off topic, but is it fair for an instructor or IT to require from a student to be able demonstrate skills which are required for cave diving or wreck penetration such as perfect trimming or positioning while the student is only doing his/her Advanced Nitrox course? You wont be expected to be 'perfect' all the time, but you have to start somewhere, right?

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How do you dive on CCR?! You've got some specific angles there! The point of being horizontal, IMO, is to reduce drag and therefore increase efficiency in the use of your gas - more relevant for OC than CCR. If you have a lot of gear hanging off of you, then you may not be decreasing your drag so much, even if you are horizontal. Being streamlined certainly helps. Also, most rigs breath differently in different positions so you may be conditioned to dive in a specific position to get the best WOB In other words, there are other things to consider when discussing your trim in the water and what purpose that trim serves for your diving.

Swimming fast under an angle creates lift much like an aeroplane wing. When you stop swimming you start sinking because of the sudden loss of lift (that you had adjusted your buoyancy to).The point of being horizontal, IMO, is to reduce drag and therefore increase efficiency in the use of your gas - more relevant for OC than CCR. Unless you react fast you'll throw up silt or worse destroy the reef...

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How do you dive on CCR?! I try to swim as close to horizontal as I possibly can, at times varying my forward speed through the water to assist in keeping the CO2 at or near the bottom of the scrubber for the longest possible duration. Everyone knows the specific gravity of CO2 (1.5189) is lower than that of O2 (1.1044) or N2 (0.9669), so I NEVER put my head in a downward position, thereby totally eliminating the concerns associated with Hypercapnia and Nitrogen induced DCS while on CCR. Then, upon exiting the water, I drink copious amounts of castor oil, to eliminate anything else that may have recently built up in my system. LOL, sorry, I just couldn't resist.
