I think Australia has the highest number of deadly snakes in the world, prolific great white sharks in the south and a shed load of spiders that can kill by looking at you from 20 feet that live in dive gear, theres invisible jelly fish that can kill in the north and blue ringed octopi in the middle that cause total body paralysis - and heaps of other things

Wrecks - scattered mostly down the east coast - some in the west

Brisbane is hot and shitty, Melbourne is well Melbourne - So your best bet is Sydney - a few good Rebreather friendly shops here too.

Wow...what an uplifting recommendation! I'm glad I'm heading over there for my honeymoon!

Re: Diving Australia

Cripes!!!! Just as well I don't live anywhere near that place!!!!

We have some great diving up here in the North of Queensland. There are some great dive locations......Lots of man eating sharks, deadly jellyfish, blue ringed octupus, stone fish, sea snakes...did I miss anything??

Let me know when you'd like to come and join in the fun.

Lance

Grahjam,
As Steve said Sydney is the best place to set base camp its in the middle. For friendly Rebreather diving and if you feel the need to see Qld or Melbourne in your holidays it 10 hr drive or 1hr by plane.

The flies will drive you nuts in the summer before you come across a poison insect or snake. which is why we go diving to get away from the flies

Lancer you forgot the dengue fever from the swarms of mossies that can lift & carry the crocks away ----not to mention leprosy.
Steve your Right , Melbourne is Melbourne, try to avoid the rat race like the plague--MMm bit less the Sydney though. Instead come to "Sleepy Hollow" Gee-long or better still --Torquay on the coast & Go diving most weekends. Multiple wrecks in most depths.

Oh come on it's not all bad. You forgot to mention that Australias Scorpions are harmless when compared to the ones found in the Sahara and Middle East.
When diving Australias west coast I had an encounter with the small boxed yellyfish. I think I now know what real pain is....

Being a former resident of WA, had a close encounter with a white tip spider... in my bed....too close to my ....

species considered culprit for causing arachnoid necrosis, a reeeeally bad skin condition, often requiring amputation of body parts.

Fortuneately, all of mine are still intact.
