rebreather for a free spirit...

Hello All;

I have been posting here for a while and getting excellent info about rebreathers. I am in my decision process as far as which unit will come home with me but this post is about my father (64) who sometimes comes diving with me. My father loves his air so I was thinking about introducing him to rebreathes with me. Now, the catch is that my father is a free spirit, he does not even bother to learn how to set his computer for an OC dive, I do it for him so you can imagine my concern about putting my father and a rebreather in the same sentence.

I am trying to understand rebreather as much as I can to be able to determine which one would be the safest type of unit for my father. As I stated before my first concern would be electronics since he would not want to bother learning how to use them, second would be maintenance and third how easy it is to dive so safety.

Since my father is not looking for performance but for more bottom time without breaking his back with an 18 l tank I was thinking about SCR’s which have no electronics even though I think that a PPo2 reader would be advisable. Since there are no electronics the maintenance should be easy and straight forward and the units should be fairly easy to fly.....

So my question to you guys is: Am I right thinking that and SCR would be safest type of rebreather for a free spirit that will strictly do recreational dives and for whom performance is not a must.

I discourage the idea altogether.

Even SCR's need to have the air supply on, the sorb changed, etc. I would fear the nature of your old man would unduly accelerate the inevitable.

stick with OC ,,, if you dad wants more bottom time and is to old to hump the gas for him self, then be a good son and hump a few side cans around on the dive for him,
