The big step

So far i been diveing an OC system but lookin at Rebreather diveing on and off for a year now. Most people i know dive OC but i want to take my diveing to the next level. In OC that means going for a tech course. I rather go for a RB course and buy my self a RB than to go tech with an OC. My main reason to convert is that i want to try something different and evolve my diveing.

My idea is to do the Inspiration Rebreather course in the red sea and buy my RB in Sweden. My biggest concern abot RB diveing is after 5000 euro realizing that it is nothing for me. My best comfort regarding the issue of cost is that i used to ride sportbikes and can compare the cost of a RB with a smile on my face. Plus i am far less likely to get killed

What bothers me is that i will be alone in the north of Sweden and made fun off by OC divers. I also fear that i will overcomplicate my diveing to the level that i skip dives due to the complexity of setting up the dive. I will naturally keep my OC but i am afraid my Rebreather will be left at hom during the trip

What i am askin from you people is the nudge trough the door. Does anyone had the same thaughts befor takeing the step?

At the end of the season, compare your gasbill with your OC-friends and see who's laughing then

If he is not doing any trimix diving - I guess Lime is more expensive than Air but then I dont dive a Rebreather so what do I know.

Re: The big step

I too was at the point of going technical with my diving. I told my prospective instructor that my goal was to eventually dive technical with a Rebreather. He told me that I could skip the OC technical training and go directly to Rebreather training.

I was already certified with the Dolphin Semi-Closed unit. This made the decision pretty easy for me. If you will ever use trimix, the savings on the cost of gas is incredibal.

Once trained and familiar with your Rebreather, the complications are very minimal (10 min to set it up and be ready to dive). I have sold my OC gear and will not dive without my RB anymore.

Sometimes I am stuck to an OC dive schedule when on the boat with OC divers, but sometimes I am not.

It is definitely more of an investment right of the bat, just the purchase of a unit hurts the wallet and it is a little bit more costly to use per dive.

You will have to decide if a Rebreather is justifyable for the kind of diving that you plan to do. If you photograph - it is awesome!
