Ordering goods from US to Canada (Alberta)

I have a trip into Alberta in Jan. Can anyone let me know what I can expect tax wise ordering goods from the US into Alberta.... Is it more cost effective that ordering into the UK? Not sure of what you guys get hit for, but the UK is horrible.

Cheers, Moray

The tax would be 5% gst plus whatever the brokerage fees would be.

Avoid UPS!!! They have extremely high brokerage fees for stuff brought into Canada from the US. USPS or FedEx is better.

A second condemnation of UPS - shipping UPS into Canada is horrible - they charge a "brokerage fee" to do the paperwork and move your item through customs - but it's a percentage of the cost of the item! So the higher the declared value the higher their "fee" - highway robbery since it's at least 20% on a $200 item plus duties and taxes

FedEx isn't much better

US post is the best way to ship US to Canada (expedited (EMS) if you want a tracking number) All I've ever paid is at most $5.00 fee plus taxes (5% GST) and sometimes not even that.

Duties depend on what it is and where it was made. Most US made items aren't taxed under NAFTA. What are you shipping?

Stay away from UPS but don't assume FedEx is any better. Sometimes the brokerage fee is included in the shipping price but after a certain value (don't recall the $$) it is not included and can be quite high.
Best bet is to use the mail and pay Canada Post to deal with import paperwork. Much cheaper.

I agree if possible use USPS as all of the other couriers rob you blind with "Brokerage Fees" what ever they are, they are too much.

Re: Ordering goods from US to Canada (Alberta)

Some suppliers only ship UPS . I've had no probelms with US Postel service, in fact it's been faster than UPS. I think they charge a flat brokerage fee of $7.00 CDN. Payable at Canada post along with the GST...
