Coating cannister with pickup truck bed liner

Has anyone had any experience with coating their cannister with pickup truck bed liner, such as Linex?

I was in FL cave country last week. I had a good deal of condensation inside the cannister. On long duration cave dives that seemed to be causing issues with the sensors. The water is around 70 F. I was told that coating the cannister with truck bed liner adds a bit of insulation and reduces the retained moisture. Does anyone have any experience with it? I'm interested in hearing about it.

I'm on a Meg. What have other folks done to reduce condensation? How effective has it been for you?

thanks,

pwl

Yep,

I used LineX on mine. Works well. Had it for about 2 years like that. I did sand the black off it though. There are other things to do but they would add a little bouyancy. Depending on what you want. A thin foam wrapping over it and then LineX. Gives you an airspace between the LineX and the Can. LineX hardens well. I have had a guy do a bunch of things. Even a 4 Wheeler. I had my backplates done too. Little texture keeps them on my back a little more without sliding. Also, no deburring. Covers all sharp edges.

And ISC has come out with a plastic can. That is insulated. With the lined AL can. You have tough and Insulated.

They did it when they sprayed a truck liner. I don't remember. I had other stuff coated too.

But, It might have been $30.... Nothing to cry about or even worry about.... I'd of Paid $100 for it.

Backplate was around $15.

Most of those places want a lot of stuff to do. So, bring in a couple of things you want coated. It also is very dependent on the shop. Mine is in St. Louis. Great Guy... Does a Incredible job on trucks too. Takes the extra time to make it right.

Any ieda how it holds up under salt water?

I saw Corey's can and the edge started chipping, he added another hose clamp to secure and hasn't had issues... Just wondering if there is a possibility of salt getting stuck in between leading to future corrosion type issues...

The shrinkage of Aluminum due to temp is well known. ie, it can shrink and the plastic will shrink at a different rate. So, it has a chance of lifting. Best thing is to rough it up so the plastic has something to bite into. That's why I removed the anodizing on mine.

Sorry, I can't guarantee it will last forever in saltwater. But, I can't due that to the regular meg either. I know a lot of people have scratched a lot of the coating off there megs and they don't have any issues.

I dive mostly Fresh water and have had no problems with it lifting or with shrinkage.

Think I dove with you before. Were you ever on the Enterprise out of Waukegan?

When I had my Meg Armor coated with LineX, one issue they told me at the shop is that edges can be tuff to handle. You don't want the LineX to come to an edge. In this case, that would be the top edge of the can. To help prevent it from peeling, you'd want to backoff a tenth or two from the edge so it doesn't have help in peeling.

Re: Coating cannister with pickup truck bed liner

I am thinking if it would be a good idea to have my AL 3L tanks covered with this stuff. Of course no one will be able to read the test dates on them and do the test but that is ok as far as I am conceraned as I am the only one using them.

It may be a problem on slow compressor type fills as the heat wont be able to get away. Anyone else see any problems?

Re: Coating cannister with pickup truck bed liner

I've seen a few sets of tanks done. Most coat only the bottom and about an inch or two up the sides, since that's where most of the abrasion occurs.

I considered it. But, being a PSI tank inspector I knew nobody would fill them. As you have to remove all coatings to do the tests. So, I decided it was a bad idea.

Straight edge to the outside of the cylinder would be impossible to verify the metal underneath was right. So, FAIL.

Same with the bottom. How can you visually inspect for corrosion and pitting of the metal if tank is coated? FAIL.

You have to be able to inspect the steel outside and inside. Paint you can tell. With a coating on it. It can be covering a lot of failure points.
