![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Annual costs There is an equation that should be taught in your cert course but most people don't figure out until about a year into diving a Rebreather, (and pray the spouce never disscovers). AE= (DI x 1.1) + ( CL x 1.5 ) AE - Anual expenses of owning a Rebreather DI - Anual total disposable income CL- Credit limit, sum of all available debt that can be incurred in a year Everyone's total ammount is differant but the math is about the same. ![]() Sometimes smart guys get away with AE= ( (DIx1.1)+(CLx1.5) )/SU Where SU is the average number of times the search function is used in fourums by the Rebreather diver before new threads are started. Sorry I could'nt resist. ![]() Don't worry just spend the money, you can't take it with you.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Annual costs Hi, I don't dare to keep track of costs per dive...What are the annual cost of rebreather diving? Scrubber cost for about 100 1 hours dives to 30m? Cells? Other cost? Typical cost of significant size. Thx in advance /Mats But I'm pretty sure the cost for 100 1 hours dives to 30m per year is the lowest for regular OC nitrox dives with oxygen deco, especially if unit cost is included and you already have a decent OC kit or buy a good second hand OC-kit. That is if you live in a civilized area with competitive gas suppliers and forget about the logistics of filling all those OC-cylinders. Sure you might get the Rebreather to turn out cheaper if you: Build you own unit and get it right at the first attempt/get a really cheap second hand one/spread the investment in that new and expensive Rebreather over 10 years. In addition to all the above you must resist to buy any new cool Rebreather-toys, not have any costly failures and get a good price on the sorb (like from the German Spherasorb dealer ;-)) My feeling is that sorb (scrubber) costs are comparable or even higher than OC gas costs for nitrox dives. In addition to this you usually have a higher maintenance cost for a Rebreather so moneywise it usually does not make sense to dive a Rebreather with nitrox... At least that is my opinion. My point of reference is perhaps wrong. My O2 and air filling cost are way lower that the average in Sweden and about half the sorb I have or have used was given to me (the other half was bought at ~4€/kg) Unless frequent trimxdives are part of the game Rebreather are simply not cost effective IMHO. So if you need motivation to buy a unit I think its much better to think in terms of interest, easier logistics, possible time savings and the very different experience (silence, warmth, ect) it brings during the dive.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Annual costs To make a like-for-like comparison, you need to consider what costs and hassles are obviated by switching from OC to CC. Imagine an OC dive to 100m on 12/60 mix and 15 litre doubles: at 7c/litre, the Helium alone is worth $252. You're breathing through 165 litres/minute of gas, but all your body is metabolizing is 1 litre/ min of oxygen. Then you are using 4 other tanks on the ascent. If you decide to do the same dive again tomorrow you have to lug the 6 tanks back and fill them all, all over again. Lots of carrying, hours of filling and lots of $$$. On a rebreather, you're good to dive again tomorrow at negligible extra cost - and the day after. It doesn't take many deep dives to save the costs of a year's worth of consumables and start paying back the initial capital cost of the rebreather. Anyway, that's what I would tell the wife if she ever found out how much my toys cost (not much chance of that... ). |

But on the other side she cant carry a heavy twin set OC. An Rebreather wich I imagine is lighter would work out. I believe I have a lot of persuading to do. /Mats |
