New airline rules on baggage

I've just returned from Canada and I travelled with KLM (Dutch airline). At Vancouver airport we had to take some stuff out of one of the suitcases, due to new rules on weight.
The maximum weight for a suitcase is now 23 kilos. This new regulation sorted out when we were in Canada.
This week I've received the Continental Newsletter, where they claim the same weight per suitcase, and a maximum of two bags per passenger.
Hopefully I have a SK and in my next trip it will be carryed in hand baggage.
If you're travelling with your Rebreather, check first your airline's rules on baggage.

Wierd I just checked with BA and Virgin who I usually flywith and they said their policy has not changed and it has always been a max weight of 32kg per bag..and you are allowed two of them in economy....euch cattle class!

and this is what the KL:M site says.

  • On flights to and from the United States and Canada, all passengers can take along two items of baggage at no extra cost. The two items are allowed to be no more than 158 cm in size each (length + width + height). The maximum weight allowance is 32 kg (70 lbs) per item of baggage. (until 1 September 2005).
  • A reduction in the free baggage allowance for the baggage piece concept to 23 kg/50 lbs (per item, max. 2 items/passenger) will start applying to Economy Class travel on September 1, 2005 on flights to and from the US and Canada and to the flights to Nigeria and Mexico for which KLM uses the baggage piece concept. The allowance of 32 kg/70 lbs will be retained for World Business Class travel. If you are making a combined Economy/World Business Class flight, the free allowance is 32 kg/70 lbs. If you are making a combined KLM Europe Select and Economy Class flight, the free allowance is 23kg/50 lbs.
Looks like its a way forthem to make more money out of you!

This is what continental give you - at least with them using the old frequant flyer gold card still get 2 by 32kgs or its not too exensve to take 32kg.

Economy Class Free Baggage Acceptance
2 Checked Bags: Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece.

Charges will apply for:
  • Extra Pieces: Over your two checked pieces - $80.00 per piece for the first three additional pieces, $105.00 per piece for the fourth, fifth, sixth additional pieces and $180.00 per piece for the seventh and any additional pieces
  • Oversize: Over 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) - $80.00 per piece
  • Overweight: Over 50 lbs (23 kg) and not exceeding 70 lbs (32 kg) - $25.00 per piece; Over 70 lbs (32 kg) and not exceeding 100 lbs (45 kg) - $50.00 per piece
OnePass Elite Members Economy Class Free Baggage Acceptance
2 Checked Bags: Maximum 70 lbs (32kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece.

This is a blurp from Air Canada's website wrt luggage restrictions.

Air Canada and its regional carrier allow each customer to bring two pieces of luggage in Hospitality Service and three pieces in Executive Class/Executive First, which is carried in the baggage compartment of the aircraft at no charge. This is known as the 'free checked baggage allowance'. The overall measurement of each piece (L + W + H) must be less than 62 inches or 158 cm, and the weight less than 50 lbs. or 23 kgs (except on flights to/from Brazil, Japan, China, South Korea or Hong Kong, where the bags may weigh up to 70lbs). Don't exceed these limits or you'll have to pay an additional amount (effective for travel after October 12, 2005) at the airport prior to travel. Note that checked baggage weighing more than 70 lbs or 32 kgs. will not be accepted.

I thought United had a weight policy of 50 lbs per bag domestic and 70 pounds International. I confirmed that today on the way home from Chicago. They even had a sign up that said $25 for bags over 50 pounds (domestic). I am pretty sure that anything up to 100 pounds would only cost $25 if it is over the "normal" limit.

I just checked Continental's web-site. The rule is now:

Two checked bags per person. They shall not exceed 62 inches in total dimensions. (L x W x H).

Up to and including 50 lbs (22.6796185 kilogram) the bags are no charge.

Above 50 lbs, but not above 70 lbs (31.7514659 kilogram), a charge of $25 USD (Saturday, October 1, 2005 25 US Dollar = 20.80040 Euro) will be assessed per bag.

I have just bought four tickets for Canada from Scotland, Zoom airlines. They allow 30kg on Premium tickets. Even a Premium ticket is a quarter of what BA quoted for cheapest economy, and a third of KLMīs quote on Expedia.co.uk. The Zoom website is www.flyzoom.com

Will be my first time on Zoom, but after booking I thought I would spread the word on the cheap flights with a baggage allowance that covers more than a pair of spectacles. Watch out: their quoted prices do not include taxes. If their flight or service stinks, I will let you know by an edit of this in two weeks, but all looks quite good.

What about LTU (www.LTU.de). 30 Kg (40 kg in buz) + 30 kg for sports equipment. Works for me. We are trying them out on our next trip to Egypt. Dusseldorf is only a 2 hour drive from Antwerp, so certainly doable.

Edit on arriving back in UK:
Wow! Spread the word to all divers: Fly Zoom!
Before the flight to Canada, a lady from Zoom rang me because we were travelling in a group of 4, spread all over the place. She offered to help us with better seating. She also commented that:
ZOOM ALLOWS 30KG PLUS 30KG OF SPORTS EQUIPMENT!!!!

She confirmed that a rebreather was a piece of sports equipment.

I checked this again on the return path, and the chap at the gate confirmed, 30Kg and 30Kg of sports equipment.

Premium class out, economy back. Newish Airline (3 years old), run by a Scotsman in Canada. Obviously avoided hiring anyone from BA or Air-France, because the service is very good.

If you do go overweight, it is CAN$5 per Kg: less than on BA, but soon mounts up.

On KLM, I have just received a letter (I have a Platinum frequent fliers card on KLM to 2010), to say that where the two piece rules apply, one is only allowed two pieces of 30Kg. Pop goes the 20Kg extra baggage allowance, or times when we have travelled with 10 pieces without extra charge. KLM check-in St. Petersburg Russia is still very good, but elsewhere the excess charges make KLM and Air France a bad choice. Interestingly, for KLM to Canada, the quote on Expedia was UKP3400, and on Zoom UKP400.

Only other thing: Canadian immigration control for Brits, is the hardest in the world! In 30 years of travel, I have never had as much agro as from Canadian immigration. They picked out one of my colleagues also. There was a guy from Intel there, visiting Nortel, and their questions started, "Who do you work for?"
"Intel"
"Who are Intel?" (Where have Immigration officers been?)
"They make computers"
"Who are you visiting?"
"Nortel"
"What is the relationship between Intel and Nortel?"
Two hours later, left immigration control, Intel guy was still there. But then we got stopped by Canadian Customs. Including having to fire up your laptop, they did a search on the hard disk for "*.jpg". Fortunately in thousands of images they checked, no-one who has used my computer went to any porn sites, or had any strange preclivities.
Not even any of the strange avatars that folk use on this site.
Nightmare customs, nightmare immigration, great airline.
We will be running a dive trip there as soon as the ice melts.

Zoom fly direct from Canada to Paris, all over the UK during summer, and to Hawai and Caribean during the winter.

Re: New airline rules on baggage

Yeah nice guys Canadian customs.........

They pulled my brother and told him they had found a load of heroin in his baggage (he is skinny the lucky sod!) kept him for an hour.

He said "Well if you've found heroin, and it is a very big if, which is miraculous seeing as I haven't ever had nor used that shit, then why don't you arrest and charge me?"

Seems that was too difficult for No-Shit-Sherlock the top customs tec and....

5 minutes later he was on his way out of the airport off to see his bird.............

Nice to know they are protecting their country from us terrible Brits.

Cheers,

Dave
