As long as we're talking about 'corner of the envelope' bottles for intermediate depths, don't pass up a look at the Luxfer L45W bottle. 4.7 l and 310 bar DOT rated ~ 51 cf (charts say 45 cf, but do the math. I've personally measured them at 4.7 l water volume). 1 inch taller & 1.5 inch bigger dia than an AL 19. I've used them for years & love 'em. Empty buoyancy essential equal to AL 30.

That sounds like a good alternative as well.

They were way too heavy and didn't ride right in the water. I went back to the AL80s and especially the AL72s. You see the AL72s in cave country quite often, and I think I actually like those the best overall.

I spoke to the manufacturer at DEMA last year (2006) to see about getting them. The company will make them only if there is enough demand to make a run of them. I forget what that number is offhand, but it would take a number of us (and I know several others that would be interested) combined to make the minimum number required. I waited a year to try to get ahold of them, and then I finally gave in and bought a couple of 80's. I couldn't wait anymore. I still might be persuaded to get some if they come up. |

This is probably the best argument point I've heard for carrying the AL80 vs the ST66/72 while it is full. This statement has made up my mind to abandon the Steels. The rest of the reasons are fairly loose. If you want to rig up a 72 and bring it on our dive, I would be happy to experiment with you to see how it works in practice. We have learned a lesson or two together recently , so why not learn something else along the way? ![]() |
