Rebreather database for Rebreather World?

Hi Rebreather World

I enjoy being a member of rebreatherworld, a lot of information from people with tons of more experience than me to help answer questions or give their opinions on a given subject, right at my fingertips.

However I am missing a function. Why not make a database with all earlier, current and soon to come factory rebreathers? (But no future vaporware!!!)

The purpose of the database could be:
  • Help new Rebreather divers compare and choose between the different models
  • Create an overview of what is current and what is soon to come
  • General interesting information
Functions:
  • Ability to compare selected model features.
  • A search tool with different criterias from the database can help find the right rebreather.
  • Rating and commenting of the rebreathers by the Rebreather World users. This would be the most complex feature but also the most interesting. A RBW user can rate a rebreather on a scale from 1-5 that he/she has listed as "current" or "other".
The rebreathers should be rated in different categories like: Build quality, adaptability; value for money.... four or five categories should be enough. So when a user look at a rebreather in the database he/she would se something like this e.g.:
Rebreather: Megalodon 2.5
Company: Innerspace systems Corporation
Picture
Overall rating: 4.4 (106 user ratings)
Build quality: 4.6
Adaptability: 4.5
value: 4.1

Database data
When a rebreather is entered in the database, a lot of factory information should be entered. Examples:

Type: SCR, PSCR, eCCR, mCCR
Price range: $8000-$9000
Scrubber type: Axial, Radial
Scrubber duration time: 200 min
Scrubber material weight: 3kg
Hydrophobic Scrubber: yes, no, user choice
CL position: BM, OTS, user choice
Built in decompression: yes, no
BOV included: yes, no, user choice
CL material: Neoprene, Nylon, user choice
Different tank sizes: yes, no
Availability: No more, yes, soon to come ;-)
Weight: 25 kg
HUD: Yes, no, user choice
Buoyancy wing included: yes, no, user choice
Training available through: TDI, IANTD, GUE
More......

The database could also list the distributors instructors in their area (For free off course ;-)

An important benefit of such a database would be that not so good rebreathers will get a bad rating. In theory, less people will buy this particular unit and thereby guiding divers choosing better and safer equipment.
This could also push the rebreather developers to make us even better units.

Maintenance
I am no programmer, but I know that it's not done in a weekend. But as I see it, there will be little maintenance when all the data has been added in the database.

Just my Friday thoughts, I better get back to work now.

By the way Rasmus, did my new suit arrive yet, if I don't get in the water within the next week, I will go crazy for sure ;-)

Have a great weekend and safe diving....

/Christian

Re: Rebreather database for Rebreather World?

Hi,

Jan Willem Bech has been collating information on a very wide and diverse range of rebreathers (both production and home build) on Rebreathers Worldwide for years.

A good starting point and a very interesting read.

I agree that a database like the one you suggest would be very nice to have, but I'm not sure that it would be all that useful, as things change very fast and the considerations when purchasing are very diverse (as many of the threads about 'which rebreather should I buy' indicate).

Cheers,

Hmm, for a rebreather expert i would agree, then it is hardly interesting, but it might be usefull to someone who does not yet have a deep insight in rebreathers. A database would ease the task of gathering knowledge of the different units for someone needing this. And I espicially think that the rating system would be very very interesting!
A site like "rebreathers worldwide" is non dynamic and it is difficult to create an overview IMHO. A dynamic database is easier to maintain and has no problems coping with changes or new units.

Re: Rebreather database for Rebreather World?

I think this would be very useful. From an admin point of view, keeping the units specs up to date could be the job of the mfg...so its basically a marketing tool for them. The end-user ratings could be pulled from polls on Rebreather World. I'm no computer guru either, but I see this as beneficial

I do not see maintaining the database would be much work!
  1. Find out what should be registered in the database from the rebreathers
  2. Make a list of all the rebreathers eg:
    Megalodon
    Copis
    Inspiration Classic
    Inspiration Vision
    Ouroboros
    Sentinel
    Kiss classsic
    Kiss Sport
  3. Make a post on the forum asking the members to help fill in the data on the different units.
  4. The chossen members sends in the lists
  5. The admin put them in the database
  6. The database is launched
  7. Members/manufactures find erros and reports them to admin
  8. The admin corrects the errors
  9. A few times a year, a new unit comes to life. This will have to be entered in the database.
I know that this is just theory

Hmm, I would rather ensure new fresh ratings put in by members after s specific criteria. This way, the rating will be more accurat for it's intention.

Re: Rebreather database for Rebreather World?

Ratings are very difficult to collect, I might like my KISS and therefore I'll give it 5 outta 5 for everything, Megs are Evil (allegdedly) so all I need to do is put one on my list (which is unchecked) and give it 0 for everything...

I'm sure lots of people will be fair and admit that certain parts of their beloved rebreather are cr*p, Hmm- Standard KISS Eleaktronics, gotta be fair and give them 2/5, Simple, clear & redundant but require watchmakers skills to maintain but how do you confirm it? Its Wikipedia all over again, millions of pages of unedited, uncrosschecked (and some blatant CIA propoganda) thats many of the net-nerds now take as fact!

To fairly access a unit it would need to be one you are not interested in owning. (IMVHO)

Re: Rebreather database for Rebreather World?

Why limit this to rebreathers? I would like to see datasheets, reviews, impressions, etc. regarding lots of different rebreather oriented hardware and software.
