| CK+Shearwater ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Rebreather database for Rebreather World? Once a week, somebody writes in to ask for advice on which rebreather to buy. The rebreather community ought to get better and better at answering those questions over time, but it doesn't: it gets worse. Nobody wants to get involved in a banal argument about which is the best rebreather. It's particularly odd that there is not a single article in the library helping people to make this difficult choice. I wish there was one, written by somebody with experience with a number of different units. Anyone? I think that situation is echoed throughout the diving industry, ask a diver for the best suit, reg, BCD etc and the same arguement as "Which is the best Rebreather" will unfold.I don't think you can devise an answer to the "best" question but it might be possible to generate a "Which Rebreather is best for me" Wizard, a Db that might help people narrow there ever growing choice? |

I did just that last night on the Internet.I wanted to find the best small digital camera for our next move, found such a "Find My Camera" Wizard and followed it thru. At the end, the recommendations were no where near what I already researched and had in mind. Such "Wizard" is only helpful when someone has no clue to what they want, then might as well use a dart board. A feature-comparison list accompany by a long list of user's opinions why they pick a certain unit based on their perceived needs might probably help to identify similarities ? |

I wanted to find the best small digital camera for our next move, found such a "Find My Camera" Wizard and followed it thru. At the end, the recommendations were no where near what I already researched and had in mind. agreed, they are almost universally crap but they are almost universally affiliate marketing tools- the "helpful" wizard is actually steering you to the camera its trying to sell.... or it contains so many products (there must be 1000's of digital cameras) that finding 1 single correct suggestion is very hard. The many "compare.com" type sites are very heavily loaded. So I do agree with Phi but with Rebreather World and Rebreather's we have a couple of advantages- the pool of products is small and we (as a group) could be impartial (if we avoid the ratings IMO )Such "Wizard" is only helpful when someone has no clue to what they want, then might as well use a dart board. I guess, a wizard is only as good as the questions it asks then you just have to provide fair answers. A feature-comparison list accompany by a long list of user's opinions why they pick a certain unit based on their perceived needs might probably help to identify similarities ? Yes it would, however visualising the features of 15-20units might be a tough ride for the newbie, if you could offer them 3 to compare it might be easier?Where are you located? What is your primary type of diving? What depth range do you aim to dive? Do you prefer DIY or factory return Servicing? Etc etc.. You might answer- Europe, Wreck, 40-60mtrs, DIY etc Wizard might output- 1. rEvo 2. CK 3. COPIS Meg (Just an eample, don't shout if you don't agree please?! )Was just a suggestion... |

It is a good suggestion. We are just discussing (without getting too emotional )Was just a suggestion... like some people)As you said, it depends largely on how much "marketing-driven" of the suggestion algorithm behind the scene. And, at least, there will be some check-and-balance system on Rebreather World if it was too obvious favoring one unit over another (i.e. "MegWorld"... just kidding ) |

I think that situation is echoed throughout the diving industry, ask a diver for the best suit, reg, BCD etc and the same arguement as "Which is the best Rebreather" will unfold. A database would help you answer many questions, but your first problem is surely knowing what questions to ask! A Rebreather is expensive, so is the training, and if you decide to switch over to a different model the crossover will cost you dearly in time, money and effort. Fortunately that wasn't the case with a reg or BCD! Most problems can be solved by throwing money at them, but not with rebreathers, since cheaper mCCRs have better safety records than eCCRs.I don't think you can devise an answer to the "best" question but it might be possible to generate a "Which Rebreather is best for me" Wizard, a Db that might help people narrow there ever growing choice? |
