Re: Smoking And Ccr Diving

are you kidding???

tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide, which is an oxygen inhibitor for your red blood cells. your red cells are like a passenger train, carrying oxygen to your bodys cells, what CO does is get on the train and like a bunch of bully gang members, they prevent the oxygen cells from boarding the train, and it takes up to 12 hours for that to change.

If you are going to be a serious diver, quit smoking. There may come a day when you need every bit of o2 your body can provide, not to mention smoking ruins your bodys natural impulse to breath, based on Co2 levels, not lack of oxygen. think of what your loop must smell like if you dive after smoking....yuk.

on the good side, I heard that over a millon people quit smoking last year.... they died.

HEY MAN...TAKE IT EASY...

First of all, I'm a non smoker
Second I'm very well aware of the facts that u stated (but I admit I love the little train story...)
Third, well diving is my job...so I guess I'm pretty serious about it...

But enough, what I'm after are more detailed informations about blood chemistry change and quantities of CO/CO2 and so on...

But thanks for ur conribution anyway...cool to see people getting really passionate about things...

Well I don't think that "are u kidding" is a good argument when u try to convince somebody to change an habbit and for sure not an addiction...

I would prefer to go with hard facts...

But then if u havent been addicted to smth in ur life maybe is hard to understand...

Thanks for your contribution though...

I figured if he is asking then he is not planning on quitting. If it was question about gear or a technique then logic, facts, and disscussion has merit. With an addict advice is mostly ignored or used in their own rationalizations.

That isn't really true. For example, there have been plenty of papers written on the impact health professionals can have with gentle 'quit smoking' advice and information provision, and suggests that it DOES have a positive impact. Check out Rollnick's 'Cycle of Change' model if you're curious about it.

Re: Smoking And Ccr Diving

All self-righteousness aside, and coming from a 2 pack a day smoker who quit 8 years ago - I have to say that the absolute BEST cigarette (better than the after-you-know-what, better than the first one of the day, etc) was the smoke I'd have at the Stern of the boat after a deep Heliox dive, staring at the setting sun, thinking about what I had seen/done that day.

Ahhh... To be that young and foolish again...

And you know, Cousteau used to smoke them nasty French cigarettes, and he was known to do all right in the water, and lived to be about 150 or so...

I'll tell you one thing - in the places where we traveled (often where westerners hadn't been seen in 10-20 years) trading a "Benson & Hedges Menthol Light" with one of the tribal Elders or Chiefs would go a loooong way toward smoothing relations, and would nearly always make for a memorable experience.

I'll have to write a book one day...

Kevin.
