As a cardiologist who percutaneously closes PFOs on a regular basis, I found the study interesting when it was published in Circulation. However, as mentioned above it is a "first in man" pilot study. If I had a PFO and needed it closed I would go with one of the currently approved devices that has a long track record of safety and efficacy. The bioabsorbable product is interesting, but needs a lot more investigation.
is Circulation considered a good journal for this sort of publication. does it have good peer review?

it looks promising. obviously for a few there is the issue of size. i wonder if there are plans to make any bigger ones. from my wanderings around the internet, IF (and that's a big IF) antibodies were raised against the pig collagen, then it could react with human collagen. i wonder how antigenic in reality collagen would be, given that thousands of women inject into their faces etc around the world. this kind of partially answers my own question. allergic reactions to bovine collagen is documented. Aust N Z J Ophthalmol. 1996 Aug;24(3):257-60. perhaps screening prior to procedure?
while i work with immunologists i'm not, so these are just my ponderings.

Also one of the justifications for the development of this product is the later possibility of further Left atrium surgery/procedure that isn't possible with current devices. is it really a concern, that the current devices interfere with treatment later? even this device has nitinol springs/framework so it will still be present til well after you've left this mortal coil.

PS. you're welcome Dave, it was my pleasure!

Question Re: Alternate PFO Treatment

Very interesting!

Could the Docs speculate whether if this new thing failed, a normal closure could be used afterwards?
