Re: James Bond on a Rebreather?

according to wiki the rebreather in Die another Day is a wooden prop. also featured in thunderball in a more simplistic form - questionable as to whether it really is a rebreather. I've only ever seen one james bond movie and that was in 1988, otherwise i know Nothing!

He was holding his breath while being filmed. It was not a working Rebreather.

Two CO2 cartridges glued together leaves a little to be desired as a rebreather, but the film-makers did get enquiries from the military as to how they made a mini-rebreather. Catherine Zeta-Jones also uses a rebreather in Entrapment, also starring former bond Sean Connery. Incidentally this was made from a rejected script for the Thomas Crown Affair remake, starring one Pierce Brosnan.

The military was really dumbfounded when told "they were holding their breath."

I think it was on a program called "Beyond Tomorrow" where they showed a unit similar to the one in this picture, made in Japan. If I remember correctly it was good to 25 feet for 15 mins.

Re: James Bond on a Rebreather?

In Thunderball, Q never actually says that the device is a rebreather. He says it should be used "in the event of a rebreather not being available".

In For Your Eyes Only, Bond uses a backpack with a KMB helmet which looks remarkably CCR like (apart from the bubbles ).

Out of interest I have had the pleasure to work for Egil Woxholt who was the 2nd unit underwater cameraman for a number of the “Bond” movies as well as many others, his work included:
1965 Thunderball
1969 HM Secret Service
1981 Das Boot
1985 View to a Kill

Before his death in 1991 We used to get his stainless steel camera housing at our works and (repair) modify, weld up and polish up the dammed thing. Egil at the time lived in London, the housing looked like a cross between a small Russian silver Spuknik satellite and an atomic weapon. I used to drive down to deliver the beast, get as near his flat as I could and drag the thing down the street the rest of the way. Try that today! lol

In the “For your Eyes Only” film the diver in yellow is Dave Heales from Normalair Garret, the yellow rig is in fact a prototype CCR Royal Navy NGL Model “Deep Dive 500” Westland helicopters who had taken over Normalair Garret promptly sold it, We still have the fabrication drawings at work, if interested I will dig them up and post. It was a very capable system for deep diving lock out, sadly at the time the director of underwater weapons at Royal Navy Portland (DGUW) didn’t take kindly to his “sensitive” UBA gear turning up in a “Bond” movie, I guess he didn’t need the publicity or the money, should have sold him on Egil’s camera housing and told him it was found “floating” in Portland harbour. iain
