![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | What to do? OK team here is a delicate one for you. What do you feel you would do in the following situation; Let's say you are an experienced trimix CCR diver and there you are planning to go for a trimix depth dive and you find out that the only other person available for the dive is not trained and very inexperienced but believes they are up to the job. Do you; Call the dive and sit it out Dive solo Dive with them ???

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: What to do? Great question. Clearly he is not qualified to say whether he is up to making the dive: he doesn't know what it is he doesn't know, because he has neither been taught nor does he have prior experience. If he's not up to making the dive he is likely to kill one or both of you. That's not a calculated risk. I strongly believe that, once fully appraised of the risks, a man has a right to kill himself in any damn fool way he choses to. I just don't think your buddy is in a position to evaluate the risks. I would be interested to know the legal side of this. If anyone heard him say he lacks the qualifications, and then later there was a serious incident, my guess is you would be fried in court. I'd guess you would lack any of the legal protection you would have if you had formally been his teacher. I'm also intrigued by the legal side of solo trimix diving: would it void the insurance for your dependants? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: What to do? if you showed up to the dive/boat solo, anticipating getting paired up with a stranger, but in fact need a buddy, this is poor planning...sit it out. if you planned on diving solo, dive solo. of course, just because one is adv trimix certified, doesnt mean they are capable of diving solo (or perhaps divng av trimix necessarily). I've also seen newbie OW divers become instructors after less than 1 year experience...still wearing diapers IMO.

Having been in this situation (and making the wrong choice, I must admit, which turned out o.k. anyway), I would call the dive. How many of our buddies would still be here if they had that much sense? ![]() You can always dive tomorrow - unless you're dead. My $.05 worth. Kevin. |

I spent a lot of time teaching and taking inexperienced divers in the water, and I still take new or inexperienced divers in, but it has to be whan I want to. If I have paid for a trip and someone wants to pair me up with a new diver when I am looking at a longer or deeper dive than they are capable of, then if I'm not offered a partial refund I won't go in with them.
