Meg-Travel Friendly Rebreather???

I have just accepted a job that involves quite a bit of European travel and could mean that I'm away for up to 5 weeks at a time. Now sod that but there is no way that I'm not diving for 5 weeks! I dive an Inspo at the moment and am thinking of getting a light travel frame or making my own backplate but how much of a saving will I get if I go for a Meg?

Get a travel frame - it is going to be lighter than a meg.

I still need a 3 hour + scrubber, what does the Mini-Meg have? I will still keep the Inspo for UK RIB diving but the Meg looks better for travelling.

Then get a Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) canister from ISC.

I reckon for travel this will be the way to go - does anyone know what the can costs on its own and how much abuse it can take (I've heard about Prisms being crushed in the cargo holds etc - could this happen with the FRP?)

Re: Meg-Travel Friendly Rebreather???

I've seen/held the prototype...it's fricken' cool! The material is burly, possibly the toughest thing available in terms of abrasion resistance. It's quite light. As far as I know you can not get it yet, however...at least not a month or so ago.

I second that from personal experience on our last trip to Singapore.

My luggage (Meg) was twice as heavier as my buddy's (TF, Vision, tanks).

The FRP can is a great idea, but I was told only 2 prototypes have been manufactured and it is a looong way of from production.

If you dive warm water, in practice 3-hr shouldn't be a problem on units uses relatively the same amount of sorb (MiniMeg, Evolution). I have done much more than 3-hr when diving shallow.

Re: Meg-Travel Friendly Rebreather???

I do not have a Meg. But from a cost perspective I would get the travel frame. You can read my article on the Inspo with the KT frame that I use for travel as well as local diving. I no longer use the yellow box. The article shows some pictures of the unit packed in a carry on suitcase. I am not sure but I think they are now making an even lighter version.

Re: Meg-Travel Friendly Rebreather???

Thanks for the replies guys, seems as though there isn't much between them weight wise, the Inspo may even be lighter depending on frame. Think I'll keep the Inspo until the Apecks 3 is out and have another look then.
