![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How many of you dive OC ... My gas consumption used to be good on OC. After 5 years on CCR, the pressure to conserve my gas supply is non existant, so I breath like its going out of fashion. I still consume O2 at the same rate regardless of breathing rate. Stress and fitness levels are the same, ie crap. Interesting. YMMV. Most people start diving with an RMV over 25l/min and get it down to 12. I would have thought there are 2 main causes of the beginner having double the RMV:Bouyancy on OC is spot on though! Nothing like a CCR to focus your mind on bouyancy. 1. Hyper-ventilation due to stress; and 2. Poor gaseous exchange due to not having been taught about breathing deep and long. Gaseous exchange is such basic science, I can't imagine anyone actually forgetting it, ever. Whether you chose to apply it or not is a personal choice. Rebreather divers are older, and that may be a factor in their RMVs not being what they once were. I see 70-year-olds here in Tokyo practicing Judo - and throwing each other. Physical fitness is clearly also an attitude of mind. My recollection was that PnL was asking whether switching to rebreathers necessarily made your RMV worse. My personal opinion is: not unless you chose to let it happen. And if it does happen I'd have thought that the first port of call should be the gym. |

When its the right tool for the job. ie when the diving is shallow (say <25m) But, If Im on a trip diving CCR and a shallow dive comes along I wont switch gear/setup to OC just for one or 2 dives - but if Im going somewhere for a series of shallow stuff - its OC for me. Great to travell with ![]() Tight caves, sidemount at the moment on OC (but thats going to change )What he said, If I were to go do a scallop dive in 20m of water id take my twin 7s not my CCR. When i go to the Red sea and squeeze in a few dives i do them OC as its not worth the hassle of taking a CCR out for one or two dives. I do shallow dive my CCR for the reason i don't get enough diving in to stay on top of it through the winter when its freezing cold but apart from that Id rather dive OC on anything less than 30m. I bought the CCR to make 50m+ wreck diving affordable and to avoid gas logistics problems on multi day trimix trips, not because I like the idea of CCR. ATB Mark Chase

The only time that happens is when I am on Vacation with my wife and I convince her that "we" need to go diving when that was not the plan of the vacation. If I were to go do a scallop dive in 20m of water id take my twin 7s not my CCR. I do a couple Oyster dives each winter that are typically in 5m of water and I would NEVER do it OC. Warm moist air... hmmmm very nice to have when doing a 2+ hour dive in 38-42F water. I typically just shut the dil off and dive it as a pure O2 rebreather... Dive Safe.. Mark |

This past weekend, three dives on OC, a total of 37 minutes at a max depth of 33 ft, vis of 4-5 ft, in a lake *others* dive consistantly on a CCR? First OC dives since my Meg Mod 1 course, and...I HATED IT. No thanks, I have no interest, and no desire to dive it OC or CCR. I for one wouldn't subject my women or my Meg to such degrading treatment. I, unfortunately (or fortunately) am now irreversably spoiled. Now...the question is...$1000.00 to the coast of BC every month, or $3500.00 every 2 to a WW location?

I also dive OC for the mid week night dives at Stoney. On air the cost works out less than on SCR. I haven't managed many SCR's this year yet [or OC for that matter], but I hope to be back in the sea with it next w/e, weather permitting!
