Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

Does anyone recognize this beast? Suspect it is eastern Europe military, but in reality do not even know for sure it is an O2 Rebreather.

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

Ken, show me some more detailed photos and write down what's on the cylinders and I'll try to ID it.

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

It is a Czech ZP-10 Tank escape device. Not a Rebreather. The vest is for floatation. The corrugated hoses run from a regulator mounted atop the vest & attach to the sides of the standard Czech M-10 or M-10M Gasmask. The double tanks are 2 ltr each & rated @ 30MPa. As far as I can tell the valve is DIN (I currently do not have a DIN regulator & havent had the chance to verify). I have one of these units, with another due to arrive tomorrow. It appears to be absolutely unissued. You could probably quickly make a simple Rebreather with some T-Hose connectors between the Gasmask & the corrugated hoses that lead to a scrubber & CL. I have a different Rebreather design, which I'll post shortly, but I intend on using the tanks (after inspection & O2 clean) & possibly the regulator. If anyone is interested I can post a link to a Czech language website that has a write up & a copy of the manual.

Thanks much for the ID. Don’t own one yet, but was considering purchase (as if I needed to add even MORE weird junk to my basement!). Hmmm, a couple of little bitty 295 bar 2 L steel tanks.........

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

My thought exactly. And if it is a standard DIN connection, it would work out well. I also like the the way the tanks are mounted, nice compact unit in a metal housing with all stainless fittings. Interestingly enough, there is no real pressure guage but rather a a clear plastic tube containing a black piston. Green, Yellow, & Red lines on the tube & the position of the piston indicate how much air is left. Another odd feature is that the 2nd stage of the regulator actually has 2 LP hoses. The 1st is connected like any other regulator, the 2nd goes to a large circular brass device attached to the bottom of the 2nd stage. Cant tell if it is some sort of depth compensation/balancing unit or is meant to provide a constant flow of gas. Wish I could get the manual &/or website translated properly. None of the online translators seem to do a good job. If anyone could assist with the translation, I would be greatly appreciative. Below is an except of the unit's specs from the manual.

Thanks,

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

258. Major Technical Data
- max operating depth 10m
- max duration:
- with consumption 30 l/min 40 minutes
- with consumption 20 l/min 60 minutes
(actual duration depends on the depth
and individual consumption of user)

- air container volume 2 x 2 liters
- max operating pressure 30 MPa
- max air reserve 1200 liters
- unit dimensions 390 x 250 x 140 mm
- weight of full unit 12.5 kg
- weight of unit with a bag 13.6 kg
- lift of the unit with BC inflated 129.6 N

Probably not an O2 unit since they are talking about air.

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

Jakub, you are right, it does not appear to be an O2 unit or a CCR unit for that matter. Still, it is a somewhat interesting piece of equipment with some unique features & a potential for some components to be reused in a homebuild, etc. Here is the URL to the Czech language webpage that describes the device, as well as a link to the manual. Webpage: Strany potápìèské - vše o potápìní - Záchranný pøístroj ZP-10. Manual: http://www.stranypotapecske.cz/vystroj/zp-10.pdf. If I could ask a big favor, but only if you have the time, could you look @ the links above & tell me what the the circular brass device on the bottom of the 2nd stage is supposed to do? It is the last picture on the webpage & also referenced on pages 213 & 214 of the manual. Also, the manual shows the fill port on the mainfold to be G 5/8", it appears to be a DIN valve but I cant tell for sure. I'm hoping you might know. Thanks in advance for any help on this. Here is a better picture.

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

It is not a rebreather. It is an armored vehicle escape breathing apparatus that is designed to be used with standard issue Czech military gas mask. It works like an old double hose system, breath in and breath the gas out of the exhaust port of the mask, or more likely through the bad seal on top of the mask (personal experience).
The round brass thing is a regular first stage - reduces from 30MPa to 10MPa.
The square brass thing is an inflator for the vest. Pull on the string with plastic ball and inflate the bc. Warning, there is no deflate button, only OPV!

The image on page 213 is a second stage.
Port on the manifold is a G 5/8" thread, whatever that is.

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

Thanks for looking at it again but I believe the 1st stage is not the device on the back of the 2nd stage. The 1st stage, from what I can tell, is item #7 on page 207 & described on the bottom of page 206 & the middle of page 208. Also there is a diagram of the 1st stage on page 209. The device in question is on page 213 but is the bottom half of the top picture; items 4 & 6 on 213 seem to point to it. Here is a picture of it from the webpage Strany potápěčské - vše o potápění - Záchranný přístroj ZP-10:

This website has a description of it, which of course, I cant understand. Sorry if I am but the it just doesnt seem to make sense unless the the 1st stage is split in two with one half at the manifold & half on the back of the 2nd stage. Thanks,

Re: Mystery Mil O2 Rebreather?

the manual is not very clear on it. i think it is a bottom of the second stage which also serves as a surface valve. It is open to ambient air until the system is pressurized.
