Minimum amount of diving to keep proficient with ECCR?

I dive BR80 now, but considering switching to a CCR (Orobouros) for various reasons, size being number one. RB80 with steel cylinders weights more than i do, is too bulky and borderline unmanageable in the current.

RB80 is a very simple unit and reading Orobouros manual, i am getting a feeling it's one of the more complex ones.

The question is - once you familiarize yourself with a particular unit (say 50 hrs) what do people feel is the minimum amount of diving per month that they require to maintain competency? Once a week, every two weeks? I know it would be different for various divers, but there have got to be a minimum frequency beyond which CCR becomes too dangerous. I also have a feeling that this minimum is higher than with OC or SCR.

I have too many competing interests, some of which, like flying, also require considerable time commitments and min frequency, so just trying to figure out how it all fits.

Thanks

Talk about going from extremes!!

I only get to dive once a month generally, but don't find it a problem.... of course it might depend on the level of diving your doing? Seeing as your going from RB80 to Boris maybe you're a cave monkey, in which case maybe you need to be more intune with your kit than us open water cowboys?

My typical diving in Great Lakes wrecks in 150 to 240 ft (50 to 80 meters) with a cave trip or two per year.

Re: Minimum amount of diving to keep proficient with ECCR?

Hi Vlada,

I find if I'm off the Rebreather for any more then a two week period, I get very rusty. Now having said that, I'm finding that with the additional hours being racked on the unit (Prism) I'm not as bad as it was when I only had 50hrs, it was easier at 70 and much easier at the 100hr mark. Espeically when managing a scooter, two or three 80's for bailout, flying the unit manually and trying to not loose my dive buddy in 20' or less vis. So of course, the more you use all the gear for the longest/deepest dive that you would do, the easier it will become and in time you may not have to practice as often, maybe once every two weeks not once every week.

But then not getting in the water at least once a week, would be like not having sex two or three times a day.

Re: Minimum amount of diving to keep proficient with ECCR?

I find that after a month or so you can forget little things. I think it makes sense to dive ccr at least once a month to stay proficient. On the deeper stuff I tend to do gradual work ups and dive every week if I'm able. You do have to stay sharp on a ccr and the only way is regular practice and diving.

You're clearly not married, I find that it inhibits both diving and the sex

Should someone tells that story about "taking from the jar after marriage" ?
