I got the impression that there is -Black tip reef shark and Black tip shark -White tip reef shark and White tip shark (Oceanic I guess) -Grey reef shark and Grey shark ... the later being larger and living in deeper waters Rodge |

However, you point out the exact reason why common names are not very useful for scientific identification. An oceanic white tip shark is more closely related to a blacktip reef shark than it is to white tipped reef shark. A gray whaler shark is the same as the gray reef shark.
