My vote is for a reef shark....I've seen a lot of them (several in Thailand) as well as bull sharks...Initially I confused them but bulls are much stouter and shorter. Reef sharks just look prettier underwater...bulls look a lot nastier....maybe that is subjective... Interesting note....in the 60's we were under the impression that bull sharks were only dangerous in Aussi waters...not in Virginia!!!!! So much for the experts at the time. In the late 60s had a 4-5 foot bull shark really give me a fit taking my speared fish on the second island of the bridge tunnel across the bay. After the third fish taken, I got nervous and made the mistake of putting a hand spear in him....he shook me like a rat in a tin can....broke the spear...the only thing keeping him from me...my two dive buddies still claim that I was half out of the water coming to the boat and cleared the side of the boat with a foot of clearance. It was not a pleasant experience.... I have seen bunches of them since and usually get out of the water....there used to be a resident population of them at Walkers Key at the end of the airport in just a few feet of water...they loved pieces of chicken.....and apparently shark researchers legs...... Here are a couple of reef shark shots from walkers key...note how similar the body of yours is to this. ![]() ![]() You might be amused at my discomfort when my wife found out how large the sharks were when I took my son diving at Walkers. My vote definately goes for Grey Whaler. If that is a remora on it's left pectoral, I will admit a bull sounds like a goo possibility. I have never seen a gray reef with a remora. Dived with literally thousands of these babies out in the Coral Sea, great fun... And yup, seen LOTS with remoras on them too.

![]() | Re: What shark is this? I think I'm going to have to visit you and do some diving! Don't think it's a grey reef - their second dorsal fin originates directly over the anal fin. you can see what I mean here: Florida Museum of Natural History Ichthyology Department: Grey Reef Shark Last edited by quickean : 11th May 2007 at 21:42. |

It has the full body, the large triangular dorsal fin and the small eyes. I've seen a few, including a monster 14 footer in PNG. Oh, and every one I've seen was while on Rebreather, what a surprise. Where did you you see this one? -Andy |
