Which sodalime?

Guys and girls

Having just acquired an RB80 clone, I obviously need some rocks for it, but, was just wondering what other peole use or have used. What I would like to know is;

What Sodalime you use
What rebreather you use it in
What other types of sodalime you have tried
Findings, eg. life, dustiness, chanelling?

Cheers

PRISM with Sodasorb.
Steam Machines has the distribution rights for diving grade Sodasorbs (6-12HP and 4-8HP, the former is usually used in PRISMs, the latter in SM1600s). Originally they had testing performed with both Sodasorb and Sofnolime.

Sodasorb is very popular around here due to it competitive price ($99/pail versus $125+/pail for Sofnolime) and used in Inspirations, too. AFAIK it's also what Halcyon uses in the RB80.

Within CE countries you're supposed to use the same absorbant used for certifications, i.e. Sofnolime in APD rigs (and I believe OMG rigs, too) and DiveSorb in Drägers. Use another absorbant and the certification is void.

Varous homebuilds.

Sofnolime - both the course and fine stuff. WOB worse with the fine stuff.

WR Grace - coarse - cheap (£30 for 20 kg). Dusty.

Intersurgical sphereasorb. Nice round granules, packs well, little dust - used it on a deep dive with good success. £12.50 for 5 kg can. Useful size to carry around. Get three fills out of two cans so its quite handy.

Good job the unit's not CE certified then

Dont get us all hung up on CE Stefan while you are lucky enough not to have to. LOL

While it may be true regarding the CE certification it would make better sense if the UK CE approved units led the way and did the decent thing by testing there equipment with all the other available absorbants That way the diver with this information could make an informed choice, then go ahead and use the cheapest absorbant.

Now in order to taylor make your own custom Hot grade the following is required to determin the Sodium Hydroxide content. 1 gram of soda lime in a flask add 20cm3 of water. Heat in a reflux condenser for 30 mins. Add 82 cm3 of methylated spirits neutralized to phenolphthalein with the sodium hydroxide solution and reflux for 1 hour. Allow to cool and pipette 50 cm3 into a flask. Titrate the alkaline extract with hydrochloric acid until colourless.
Calculation is Sodium Hydroxide as NaOH, per cent = V x 0.8

Now you can call your peperami stick Hot! lol

Sean,

I use the Sofnolime 8-12 grade in my Inspiration. I use the Divematics hydrophobic membrane discs on top and bottom. No dust, and staves off quite a bit of water.

In the last 7 years, I have used:
  • Sofnolime (both grades)
  • Draegersorb
  • Spherasorb
in these units I owned:
  • MK-15 (2 units)
  • Sport-KISS
  • Classic-KISS
  • PVR-BASC
  • BMR-500
  • XCR (EDO-04 CCR)
  • Dolphin (SCR and CCR units)
  • LAR-V
  • Inspiration (borrowed unit)
Sometimes almost double the rated duration in warmwater dives. See no difference in actual duration. Small grades Sofnolime increases WOB but not dramatically noticeable.

By far, Draegersorb is the dustiest. Spherasorb is the cheapest.

Channeling is most likely due to poor packing technique than type of sorb or canister design. Some units are better to pack very tight, some not so tight.

At the end of the day, if you pack it correctly and follow the recommended (read: conservative) scrubber hours, you won't see any difference.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion formed by diving the units and not by any ANSTI or CO2 lab tests. So consider what you paid for it...

Yes, but coming from you that is probably worth more than any lab figures.

Cheers guys, in the end I went with spherasorb, the fine one, because they could deliver it to me on time!!

Haven't really noticed too much effort in the WOB, although till I use the coarse stuff I have nothing to compare it to.

Sorb

Use 812 Sofnolime in my Meg, with the standard axial srubber

5.5lbs lasts me up to 6 hours out here in the Carribean, but I wont push that, usually change if I finished a dive around the 4-5 hour mark, and will always begin a tech dive with a fresh stack.

Cheers
