Have you had your VO2 and VCO2 checked????

My girlfriend is taking a biology class as a prerequisite to a nursing degree, and in this process she was used as a guinea pig for VO2 and VCO2 measurement. This was interesting because she metabolized about 2.0 litres of Oxygen in a 7 minute period and output 1.5 litres of CO2 in that period of time. She could stay down on my rebreather for over 30 hours!

I'm thinking of signing up for a non-credit class that deals with metabolism for the sole purpose of having mine measured. They test you at rest, medium, and heavy workloads. I know that everyone is different, and that a single individual can vary from day-to-day, but I think it would be interesting to be tested.

Has anyone gone through the process of being tested for VO2 and VCO2 levels?

Maybe it would be easier to get the GF or another student run the test on a bunch of folks (including yourself) for extra credit.

The problem is that the machinery is not the professor's, it is the university's. So without having some kind of affiliation, they can't do anything with us. If anyone has any ideas on an easier way to do this, I'd love to hear.

The course will be 3 or 4 weeks, once a week, and there is no grade or test. It is like a photography or knitting class that someone might take in their retirement. It doesn't sound like too much of a hassle.

Hey, they have a nursing program over here on Kauai, so will have to look into it. Beats flying over to Oahu and staying at your place where it is such a hassle to walk those 25 feet to the dive boat

Hi
There are facilities and doctors who are willing to do VO2 max testing and they can also help in this area

Your canister if the canister housing is designed correctly scrub around 200 to 260 L of CO2 but a bad design could reduce this to 50 L and of course depth is an important considertation

For practical purposes use 1 L o2 used and 1 L of co2 produced

But this of course does not account for those folks (who like PFO occurances make up a fair percentage of divers) that are co2 retainers- So the classes would be very good to discover if you may be a retainer or not-

I imagine your girl friend is in good shape and eats allot of protein and watches her carbs

Thanks Tom. She is in great shape...and gets a lot of exercise running away from me.

VO2max testing is a normal part of most research trials here. If I were where you are, I would call the UofH Hyperbaric Research Program and tell them what you are looking for. If they have any open protocols that require a max test, they will let you know. They may also have an idea of other places on campus that may be an option. Otherwise, if you make it anywhere close to Duke, look us up!

Thanks for the offer! I don't make it out there too often though.

The professor that is organizing this "class" worked at the UH Hyperbaric Research Program, so it sounds like they are a good resource. I'll talk to someone there.
