| Cap Ron scourge of the NW ![]() ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Meg goes to 255* Oy! Its true, thats the last time I follow Chatterton around looking for a wreck, that guy took 6 years just to figure out what sub he was diving on, when everybody knows the numbers are painted in 5 foot tall letters on the conning tower. Of course our aussie "friends" shoved JC and I into the water first so we could do the hard work, locating the wreck. We hit the bottom (and if anyone has dived with john you know he likes to walk on the bottom) and scared the daylights out of a giant cuddlefish, john struck up a rapor with it and I asked john to ask the cuddlefish where the wreck was since the captain had no idea and dropped the anchor on a small pile of rocks. I usually can speak cuddlefish, but this one had a strong aussie accent and between that and the HE in the mix I was having trouble getting my point across. JC wishes he brought his camera, I was wishing I had brought my spear gun (that would have got my point across). neither of us had thought to bring a compass so JC dug out a reel and tied a line to the anchor and headed out into the slight current at roughly 12 oclock and started a counterclockwise sweep with roughly 100 feet of line out. Of course since we were down under and the water swirls down the toilet the wrong way (they drive on the wrong side of the road here too) we had started our sweep in the wrong direction and the wreck was actually at 3 o clock so we swept 270 degrees before finding the side paddlewheeler. Apparantly there was a binicale still on this wreck, but they didnt tell us where it was prior to splashing, probably cause they know about those NE wreck divers and thier penchant for dragging up to the surface anything that isnt tied down and some things that are, so JC and I never saw it. We both figured that the cuddlefish sightings were the most interesting part of the dive (there was another on the wreck). the wreck was at 240 (feet not meters) or 255 if you read my uwatec BT which is calibrated in FFW. the dive shop didnt have any small cylinders so I borrowed a couple of al40's (5l for you metric types) and strapped them to the sides of my meg, so if anyone tells you I went back to doubles, its kinda true, but there was a meg strapped between them. I had decided it was time to go and flashed my light at John, but he was busy swimming off after Donal (the other meg diver) thinking it was me, but he got there and realized it wasnt when he saw long pants. Yes I did the 100 minute dive in a 3 mil shorty with a broken zipper, it was plenty warm (there was some confusion as to what was my primary insulation, the fat layer, or the hair layer) at 70f and I only shivered for a couple minutes while on the deco trapeze (that was rigged upsidedown by Samir, must be an aussie thing to do stuff inverted, of course Samir is an Iraqi terrorist but Aussie by Injection) Oztec is a great time, excellent seminars, a good showing of exibitors and extremely well organized. I will do an article on it in the next week for posting here. This evening we had dinner and drinks at the alexendria hotel and met Dr. Mike and SADave, along with Paul, Samir, Fritz, Donal and a few others whose names I either never got or promptly forgot. Dr Simon Mitchell dropped by for a drink also. More sorid details later...

Luckily, you guys doing this long winded sweep resulted in one of Samir's famous pipefish being caught up and herded onto the line! Embarrassing to admit, but now I have seen one of these creatures of myth and legend!Quote: I only shivered for a couple minutes while on the deco trapeze (that was rigged upsidedown by Samir, must be an aussie thing to do stuff inverted, of course Samir is an Iraqi terrorist but Aussie by Injection) Everyone else in drysuits (some with weezle extremes under them) and one person in a shorty. Makes you wonder if there's ANY HE in the mix... I thought the deco station was upside down as a curtousy. Then it would appear right side up for our guests, seeeing as everything else was down under and upsidedown, wrong side of the road and swirling the opposite way. Hope you guys had a nice evening. ![]() But seriously, it's good to have you here!
