Quick disconnect of offboard, onboard???

Hello All;

Well, this is my question. I am planning to get an optima which will be my first rebreater and as part of the safety oriented upgrades I am going to buy a BOV. Now, since I ll be doing no deco/recreational dives and I don't like to be over weighted I think I ll dive with the 13 cuf AL tanks. This will not permit me to use the diluent tank as bailout so I ll have to connect the BOV offboard. In the case that my buddy OC or CCR is in need of air I ll donate the offboard tank which will have a second stage and I d like to be able to clip the tank to his BC. For this I need a) an easy way to disconnect the LP hose from the offboard to the BOV and b) so I am not left without OC even in an ascend I want to connect the onboard cylinder to the BOV. The question is; is there a device the allows me to easily, safely and reliable connect and disconnect a LP hose to a BOV in order to exchange tanks in the water ?

Thank you;

Steve

I have a BOB HOWEL bov, with a quick connect which plugs into the second stage, it's very easy to connect and disconect, then i have a second stage on a 1.5mt hose for my buddy. If i'm not using my bov, i'll sling the second stage around my neck with a bungee (DIR) style, and have another second stage for my buddy bungied to the tank, (7Lt. Alu).

Hello,

If you give your bailout tank to your buddy, what will you do in case you nedd it ?
A bailout tank is not made to supply extra gas to the other divers, it's here to save your life in case of problem.

My 2¢.

A bailout tank is their for emergency bail out......whoever needs it!!! Are you going to explain to your buddies loved ones that you didn't give him/her your 'extra emergancy supply because of the off chance that you 'might have needed it'???? If you go back and read....... the bail out tank in my scenario is available for use by my buddy 'and' myself, in anycase.

Re: Quick disconnect of offboard, onboard???

I will give the regulator, not the tank.

PS: Nick, I was replying to Icarusflies.

Re: Quick disconnect of offboard, onboard???

Hello,
going back to original question,
it's easy for you to determine how many, how long hoses you need, and then if you are a little bit hand clever... there is many connectors from CEJN,
check it below...

CEJN-High pressure hydraulic,couplings,hoses and nipples

best regards
Bernard

Re: Quick disconnect of offboard, onboard???

The best way is to emplace a 3-port ball valve on the rig, feed both the onboard and offboard gas supplies to it (with a QD for the offboard) and the output to the BOV. This way you can hand-off the offboard if you *really* want to and then simply turn the valve and have onboard into the BOV. This is the standard setup that we use on the Mark-15 and it works well for any rig. Brass 3-port valves are not expensive and with some sensible hosing can be incorporated in a streamlined way.

No matter if you will want to hand off a cylinder or not (for me, not) you still need to be able to disconnect it at the entry/exit to/from the water. I'm all in favor of giving up a long hose, but not my bottle. Then again, I dive solo, so......

Re: Quick disconnect of offboard, onboard???

Thank you guys, those were the answers I was hopping to receive.

Stephan, In my first post I wrote that in the case I need/want to handover the offboard tank I would connect the BOV onboard hence the need of a quick disconnect I might not have been clear. For me it is out of the question to be without an OC bailout mostly in an out of air situation.

What Dave proposes looks to me like the best solution.

And if you have a QD hose from your 02 supply, you can use that on the BOV as well. Switch the valve to "onboard" so you are breathing onboard diluent, unsnap the offboard gas from the valve, and snap on the 02.

If you use CEJN connections (as on Unisuit, Viking suits, Apeks breathing valves, etc), and use the same on your drysuit, you can have completely interchangable quick connections thruout your system. If you can encourage your buddy to do likewise, the matrix really gets wide.
