And some if it is directly my fault. ![]() For years the IATA standard has been max 32kg per bag. This has NOTHING to do with baggage allowances, excess baggage, etc etc etc... this is purely the maximum total weight that a baggage handler was allowed to lift. This is NOWHERE NEAR in line with any other industry. My old man, at Telstra (think, whatever the national telecomunications company is in your neck of the woods) wasn't allowed to lift anything over 21kg, EVER without someone to assist, or a machine (forklift, sacktruck, whatever) to do it for him. I used to be a baggage handler. I ****ed my back by continuously, repetitively, handling bags up to 32kg. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a scrawny little shit, I could HAPPILY walk around, with a 32kg bag in EACH hand, without raising a sweat, no problems. Till my back decided it didn't like me any more. I stopped working Dec 19th 2004. Feb 12th 2005 I was told by a specialist that I would be in a wheelchair within 6 months. Thankfully I'm still walking, I have good days and bad days, but thats the way it goes. I'm sorry, but this rule had to come in, sooner or later. As long as everyone wants cheaper air-fares, the airlines aren't going to roster extra staff, to make every 20kg+ bag a "two-person lift"... In a 30min turnaround, there isn't the time to get 2 blokes in the hold to stack every heavy bag. It just isn't practical. We'd rather you had 5 10kg bags, than 1 30kg bag... As I said before, this is NOTHING to do with excess / baggage allowances, etc etc etc... this is purely for the sake of the poor guys like me, and our backs. The $$$$ values for excess baggage haven't changed. You just have to re-pack everything into smaller / lighter bags. Just think, as you struggle to lift that dive tub into the car. You grunt and groan, and get it there, and think "glad I only have to do that once"... think of the poor blokes who have to do that to 250+ bags per flight! /rant off. sorry guys, in one of them moods. Totaly agree with you and i dont own a borris so i dont mind the new alowance as long as i am able to take multiple bags. Problem is my last flight to Egypt with Thompson said only one suitcase per passanger was allowed. ATB Mark Chase

Anyone with overweight luggage will have to buy an additional bag and pay the extra charge." Apparantly between now and then they are more flexible...

You can only have more than one bag if they can clearly see that you can't carry one bag of 23 Kgs.ATB Mark Chase Cheers,

| Born Again Diver! ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: EEEKS BA will NOT take bags over 23kg from Sep If you follow the link given earlier in the post and then the link to Sports Equipment it gives the following ; "Sporting equipment You may check in your free checked baggage allowance plus one additional item of sports equipment providing the item weighs up to 23kg, and does not exceed the following dimensions: 2.5m x 1.00m x 0.80m (98in x 39in x 31in). " It doesn't say whether or not you get charged for that, but it does include dive kit. Dave |

| CK+Shearwater ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: EEEKS BA will NOT take bags over 23kg from Sep The problem with multple bags is the new policy on excess baggage. 2nd bag, whatever the weight is now a fixed fee, so you can't haggle/wink at the check in girl/boy (depending on their sex/orientation) and get a bigger bag through. The baggage handler issue is fine but if they splashed the cash on handling equipment no one would need to touch your bags from desk to plane, typically airlines are tightfisted organisations. Summary- we're being screwed again. You can ship single items up to 32kilos but thats counted as frieght and might be on a different flight to you! Bummer. Bizarrely you can still carry skis, snowboards and such like for free on relavent flights however big and heavy they are- perhaps the baggage handlers for alpine destinations are stronger?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: EEEKS BA will NOT take bags over 23kg from Sep The following extract is from the FAQ section on BA's website. In short, providing you get approval from BA at least 24 hours before travel, you can still carry up to 32kg until the end of September '07. Obviously, the key is getting the approval, but it may help if you quote this at them ..... The British Airways policy has a maximum bag weight of 23kg (51lbs). However, to allow our customers to become familiar with our new baggage policy and weight limitations, we will continue to accept bags at check-in weighing up to 32kgs for travel completed by 30 September 2007. Certain exceptions apply, see footnote below. If you present an item/piece of hold baggage exceeding the maximum weight which has not been approved for carriage by British Airways at least 24 hours prior to travel, you will be asked to reduce the weight of the item by re-packing it. If you cannot comply with re-packing your bag, the item will be refused carriage and you will be required to make alternative arrangements. To register single items of baggage that may exceed the maximum weight and which are listed as exceptions, please contact your Travel Agent or local British Airways Reservations Office before you travel.
