rebreather diving

Hello All;

This is my first post in the forum so hello all.....

Well, this is my situation. I have 60 dives in 6 month in open circuit and I want to take the rebreather path.
Security is my main concern before performance and I am not planning to go deeper than 130' in warm water.
For what I have learned about rebreathers I assume that SCR's are safer than CCR since we have a set oxygen % so there is no risk of hyperoxia as long as we don't go deeper that what the nitrox mix permits. Also there is no electronics that might malfunction (I know that some CCR are manual like the Kiss). So in fewer words the only risk with an SCR is hypercapnia and hypoxia. Am I right to assume that SCR's are considerably safer than CCR's???

Thank you for your feed back

Hello Icarusflies-

Daedalus?

Please understand: SCR or CCR- the biggest danger lies within the diver himself. Danger or safety originate and are perpetuated by the very mindset of whoever straps on the rig. Each Rebreather has good and bad traits. How the individual diver faces or ignores them will determine whether he has a bright future or an obituary awaiting.

ALL RBs will eventually malfunction. All mechanical things do. SCR is absolutely not a guarantee of "safety".

Welcome to our community and PLEASE do your homework. Study, learn, grow, and above all else, ENJOY! Never forget: Life is a finite commodity.

Ken

If you would like to join some local CCR divers to find out more about what it is like, you are welcome to join our Florida SCRUB dives.

Re: rebreather diving

Welcome. I felt the same way when I first started looking into rebreathers but after further investigation I found that eCCR was the way for me to go. I wasn't doing any deep (below 130') or deco diving at the time. But I really liked wreck diving and found that there are hundreds of wrecks around the world below 130 that I wanted to experience. So I tried to match my Rebreather to long deep deco dives. (but long and deep are relative to the individual I guess)

Anyway to avoid a long blah blah thread about me I'll cut to the chase. If I were you I would take a hard look at what type of diving you intend to do in the future and try and match your Rebreather to that. It could save a lot of time and money in equipment recycling and future training to go from one unit to another.

There are some very good SCR units on the market as well as mCCR & eCCR units it's just what fits your diving and potential future type of diving. Do your homework for sure.

Re: rebreather diving

Thank you for your replays;
I understand that Rebreather demand a high level of attention. What worries me about CCR's is that there are more things to go wrong than SCR's. I have read that many people use CCR's manually with the electronics as backup and that in this configuration there are very few fatalities. ScubadadMiami, I see that you dive the optima. This is a RB that I am considering since I live in Miami not far from a DiveRite dealer that carried this RB. Are you happy with its performance? My other choice if CCR would be the Meg which I see has a lot of fans. If going SCR I would probably go Azimuth.
