Hea divers...ever book a dive tell the capt/operator your going to dive a rebreather, show up and everyone is like SORRY WE DON'T ALLOW REBREATHERS. regaurdless if you stay down as long as the scuba people???

let us know....it happens alot in hawaii. you call the shop and they say sure, get to the boat cause you know setting up a Rebreather is easier than say cracking a beer....just to get turned away????

Steve,

That is quite an animated post.

I don't know what (if anything) you are doing to piss off captains here in Hawaii, but I have NEVER had a problem here. Rather than making blanket statements about Hawaii not being rebreather friendly, why don't you list the shops and boats that you have had problems with so that no one else will give them their business?

If anyone would like a list of shops and boats that are rebreather friendly in Hawaii, please let me know and I'll try to put one together.

Aloha,
Charlie

Re: crappy dive boats

My experience has been quite a contradiction to Steves' here in Hawaii. I'm a dive boat operator on the South Shore here in Honolulu and I have no problem personally with divers using Rebreathers, as long as they follow safe diving practices. Anyhow, please let us know who has given you trouble. Perhaps a call to the owner of the operation with our perspective could help gain an ally rather than give the captains more ammo!

Aloha,
John

Exclamation Re: crappy dive boats

Like i have stated in the past...my wife dose OC so i'm not going to stay down longer than her if i want to avoid the couch for an extended stay...here's another great aloha after you pay for the boat dive #2 only 30 Ft don't be down more than 30 min...i got another charter this after noon. probably sounds like I'm venting but...this wasn't suppose to be a TARGET of ALL oahu boat, was more of an example.

But if you do come to hawaii call john on the honey ann...he'll take you out even if your diving a propane tank...just kidding
by far the most professional of all the boats..knowss all the secret good dive spots

Aggressor Fleet no longer allows Rebreather divrs on their liveaboards. Never been to HA heard it is nice.

Re: crappy dive boats

I work for Island Divers on Oahu and have dove off several boats with our shop and never once have I heard of an issue. We have several divers who dive through our shop and as long as they have the required certifications for the unit and dive using safe diving practices they are welcome out on our boats.

Forgett the Aggressor! They cater to a "diffrent" kind of divers. I guess Aggressor "lost" our arm of the industry, and in turn I belive in the long run they shot them selfs in the foot with that anti-Rebreather decision!

My 2 cents.

Re: crappy dive boats

Been out on my rebreather with Mike Severns Diving, Maui Dreams Dive Co., B&B Scuba, Extended Horizons, and Lahaina Divers to name a few. All Maui operations and not Oahu to be sure but there doesn't seem to be any ill will here. Better narrow your Hawaii complaint to Oahu...

I have not had any problems with Dive Oahu. Either as the only Rebreather diver or when multiple Rebreather divers were aboard.
