Re: California Boat charters refusing rebreathers divers

The Great Escape, Bottom Scratcher, and I heard the Cee Ray have decided to bar rebreathers. Greg Elliott on the Bottom Scratcher told me that in the last year, except for our charter, he had only one rebreather on board.

Which begs the question, if he's only had one besides your charter, why bar rebreathers? Is CA wreck divers going to be chartering Rebreather friendly boats only from here on out?

Two points...

1. Dont give people a reason to ban breathers, theres nothing worse than a loud mouth pain in the ass.

2. Rebreather divers tend to be active and book for groups, it might be worth highlighting that....

Rob,

He gave me a hokey insurance story, but I think he just did not want to be bothered.

Yes we have 6 rebreather divers in the club and maybe more soon, so we will only be chartering Rebreather friendly boats in the future. The bad news is that this anti-rebreather policy was communicated to us only a couple of weeks before our charter.

But, the swell this weekend might make it a moot point anyway.

Are the left wing liberal do-gooders taking over the charter business now??

I thought those knuckleheads were all for equal opportunity?
Two fatalities in SoCal is a lot, but I doubt they're more than OC fatalities.
Just on the Yukon in San Diego they had more I believe, yet the cattle boats
still go there with hoards of divers.
Don't understand that they don't all convert to fishing boats.

Re: California Boat charters refusing rebreathers divers

I just booked with "Dive and Sport" in Ventura, California to dive Anacapa and
Santa Cruz Islands in late January. They offer a very fast and brand new 50 footer. (The DM dives a Dolphin) I'll let ya'll know how it goes. We'll just have to see how they react to my Dolphin CCR.

Don't know how true it is but apparently a local instructor staged a massive CF on one of his charters and he now wants nothing to do with Rebreather's.

I guess the moral of the story is to dive responsibly and this type of thing won't happen.
It's a loss. He is one of the better captains in the Pompano area. His drops in current are normally right on the money. And no need to worry about the boat being right there when you hit the surface.

Re: California Boat charters refusing rebreathers divers

The Maui Hawaii boat dives are set up for the tourist crowd largely - I've heard from some operators that they don't like Rebreather on board as their divemasters, capts, and support staff "don't understand them".

Also most boat dives here are a two tank dive - they want the first dive over in about 45 minutes and guess who always wants to be the last guy back on the boat?

I think you are better off finding a bunch of Rebreather guys and just doing your own charters and taking as much time as you like.
