Big O News (sinking)

Just got word the O sunk in 36 min , a bit faster then the 4 hour projected time. Navy will have divers down today to check for OSINWO, ( ohh shit it never went off) anyone have any other info ?

told the stern dropped like a rock with a bit of a twist at the end

Robert Turpin (the Escambia Co. Artificial Reef Co-ordinator) is a friend of mine. I should know exactly how she lies, etc later tonight.

Yup... I saw some footage on the final moments on CNN a little while ago... The stern had dropped first and looked like it was leaning a little starboard...

Re: Big O News (sinking)

From on-site this morning..... we got there a bit late and this was the best I could do on the photos - sure didn't expect to see her listing over HARD and about to go under from ~7nm out!

It was pretty sloppy out there; not unsafe for small craft, but for the guys in mid-20-foot CCs (myself included) it was a wet ride on the way in..... doesn't look it from the pictures - but it was what it was.... on the way back in the wind really started to crank from the west and make for a need to slow down significantly....

The Navo wave model site said it was going to be 2'ish this morning building to 3-4s this afternoon (typical tight chop, and the afternoon was pretty confused too as the earlier wind was out of the NW, then shifted around to more westward) - I'd say they nailed it from the amount of salt I ate..... definitely worth it tho....

Re: Big O News (sinking)

Based on a sidescan that the Navy did late yesterday it looks like it did end up settling upright...

That would put the top of the wreck at about 60fsw and the sand at 210fsw...

Time to charge up the Zepp and make a run down all 888 feet of her...

Dive Safe...

I'm in. I'd also like to go exploring inside. Seems like this could take more than a couple of dives.....

If you see a sea foam green 23 Sailfish out there... that's me. Holler at me on 16 or 68 - radio is always on......

I expect to be there on as many nice days as I can.....

Re: Big O News (sinking)

For us non-local divers who might be passing by... Which is the best port to get to the Big O from? Any recommended dive operators?

Andy
