They've been stone reliable; I've done exactly nothing other than charge the batteries. I originally had the "little" BS bulbs and didn't like the flicker, so I upgraded them to the newer design. They "just work".

Petes one flooded three times within a year from new and the last time was imediatly after coming back from repair and only at 30m. He switched to the Matasub which he initialy liked but he now feels the battery pack is too heavy. Personaly i have had a 10W halcyon for three years with the origional bulb and no problems apart from rusting stainles steel. It would apear all the problems are with the 18W product. I now run a Salvo 18W bulb on a 21W balast and again it has never let me down. I keep the 10W as a back up torch. ATB Mark Chase

So I replaced it with a used Halcyon Pro 14 HID that was up for sale at the time. What a piece of crap. It switches itself off at comedy moments, such as when my rebreather decided to flood or after carrying a load of kit to a cave entrance, it leaks (I've changed the o-rings, the switch boot and tried potting the cable and gland, still nothing helps) and as Mark says, the stainless screws and catches are rusting (despite generally being used in fresh). I only bought it because it was cheap but I'd never touch Halcyon kit again based on this.

I've had great luck with Sartek.![]() |

Is it possible to boost the power to 18 or 20 watt. if so, could anyone give specific links to what i should buy? I rarely dive more than 2 hours so battery life is not an issue (current battery life is over 4 hours on my CD Torch) Thanks Nick

![]() | Re: Here we go again,The Halcyon HID is dead again Hi. I have not seen a specific forum about lamps. If I am blind please tell me where it is. If I am not, could anyone please explain me what do I want in a lamp? I mean, I heard you talkin about burning temperature. Do I want it to be very hot o less hot? How many Kelvin? I want to start diving caves, which one would be a better one, 10W, 18W, 21W,25W, 50W,....? Which brand? Halcyon, Dive Rite, Sartek, ? Although, what i would really want to know is that about the burning temperature, the W , and the Lumen. Thanks.

Although, what i would really want to know is that about the burning temperature, the W , and the Lumen. Thanks. I can try to explain the terms ![]() With burning temperature I think you mean color temperature. It defines the color of the light. If it is low (<3000K) the light will appear to be yellowish, if it is high (>4000K) the light appears to be more blu/white. The kelvin temperature refers to the radiation of the Black body in the same temp. W = watt, the electrical power that the lamp consumes. Lumen is the light current that the lanp can produce. The more lumens the more light the lamp will output. Hope these help ![]() JH |
