I've spent some time in PNG and around and every time we ran into a glitch, it was as if an austrailian was near at hand to make conversation, buy us a beer and haul us in their rovers where ever we needed to go. They could speak Pidgeon and help us out where we were helpless without them. The only country to stand by our side in every war we ever had were the austrailians. I'm off to PNG very soon again on another adventure. I hope to see the austrailians again during that trip. You are all in first Class as far as I am concerned. Thanks, thank you all so much for your spirit and for being our friends. God Bless all of you- always Sincerely, Craig Miller U.S.A.

Fine chap that sciencediver! We like us too. Although I'm still a little dubious about Peter Allen...Back OT: Personally I've never been able to fin backwards, but at least I'll sleep well at night knowing I have the requisite equipment. I plan to do DIR-F this year in much the same spirit as my original Jetfin purchase. Maybe I'll learn?

Indeed Andrew, a fellow with fine judgement. I had a look at his profile and I'm a little puzzled as to why he has a twinset strapped to the back of his YBOD. They are an odd lot those Merkins ![]()

I have them for travel since the JF weigh a ton.

| Who loves ya, baby ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | I've tried a pile of fins over the years, most worked, some better than others. The Mares Quattro (or something like that - four 'channels') is probably the allround fin and compromise. Alas, I sold them a few years back after trying the Apollo Biofin (original, heavy rubber). Liked the ease of propulsion and weighting, especially in a drysuit. Heel strap good (with a thumb loop), buckle sucks (as usual). On OC the gas savings were astonishing, speed fantastic. Not so good against a current. Not as good as others for frog kick, but do-able. The extreme ends are Force Fins on one side and Jet Fins on the other. Both work well I think if used as designed, as do the two before mentioned models. That's the main issue, how you use them is how well they work. If the frog kick is all you do, the Jet Fins (or Quattros) beat the Bios and Force easily. If you want to go the distance, Force (or Bio) Fins will likely be better. Why do you think the cave kids all haul around scooters. ![]() The way I see it, the Jet Fins are like a sledge hammer. If you have the power to use them they generate great force. The Force Fins are like nunchuks. If you know how to use them they still give you plenty of force with minimum effort. In the end, use what works best for you. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Why Jet Fins? and a deal for you I used to dive a pair of TwinJets. I could kick just about any way I wanted in them, but couldn't back up to save my life. Not for love or money..... And once in a while, even with a proper frog kick, I'd dust the bottom. Annoying, especiially because I couldn't figure out WHY. Then one day I tried a pair of Jets. They felt like pieces of plywood on the end of my feet. Flutter? forgetaboutit. My legs aren't up for that. But frogging in them was trivially easy. The first time I tried 'em, I tossed 'em off after the first dive and grabbed my TwinJets again. The second time, I gave 'em an honest half-dozen dives, just out of spite. Then I noticed something - I wasn't dusting the bottom. Hmmmm.... for grins and giggles I tried backing up, and was actually able to manage it. Not very well, but I could. And the "board" feeling gave way to one of better control of my position in the water. Double Hmmmmm... I still wear the Jets. I too have the McMaster and Aluminum Block spring straps, but added to that a piece of tubular nylon for the spring covers instead of the stock vinyl hose. It helps the ankle factor. So does having the right length - if yours are too short then the pressure is way too extreme. Get longer springs and take the Dremel to them to cut to fit your feet. Helps a lot. I tried a pair of Apollos once since. They felt like - and dove like - wet noodles. I've long since sold the TwinJets, but it would be interesting to try a pair of those again and see what I think of them now..... |
