Support U.S. Legislation to Stop Shark Finning

In 2000, the U.S. government enacted the Shark Finning Prohibition Act, intending to make shark finning illegal. But the law only applied to fishing vessels, not all vessels - a loophole that has been grossly exploited.

On April 9, the Shark Conservation Act of 2008 was introduced, which would close the loophole and goes one step further for shark protection: it requires that all sharks be landed with their fins. This bill is a vital step in ensuring protection for global shark populations.

Please click here to the petition to support the Shark Conservation Act of 2008.

While I agree sharks need protection, what does this hope to accomplish?
Finned or landed whole - the shark is still dead...

I agree. I don't want any killed. However, if people are going to do it, they should not waste any part.

If all sharks have to be landed with their fins, then this reduces the capacity of boats, since they can't just cut of the fins and dump the body overboard. Like Howard, I would rather see a complete ban, but it's better than nothing.

Personally, lets prohibit shark fishing and start drilling for oil in the Gulf.

Its a win win win win. The sharks get to live, we get cheaper gas, get to dive on the rigs plus we get to tell OPEC to GFY. Don't get much better than that.

This my understanding as well, better than nothing. If an outright ban can't succeed, then red tape them to death.

Petition signed, thanks SDM for the link/thread. -Andy

Re: Support U.S. Legislation to Stop Shark Finning

Glad to know that others care..... I finally got a copy of Sharkwater on Bluray and I was just wowed... I can't beleive whats going on still and in protected areas. Highly recommend people watch Sharkwater. Its amazing...if people were cutting dolphin fins off and letting them bleed to death in the water there would be a global outcry...but sharks just dont get the same respect nor care.

Dolphin slaughters are going on actually. Unfortunately, they haven't triggered the massive public outcry that they should have. There are countless videos; here's an example:

What, have you turned into a shark hugger now Joe - even after our SC episode?
