story on Larry King live

check out this news teaser from Larry King:

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

This is the kind of stuff that discredits our work as ocean advocates and marine scientists. ...a prime example of a dramatic overstatement of an "attack" (when it was not) reaching millions of people...a step back in shark conservation IMHO

She misunderstood shark intentions - they were stunned by her beauty and willing to mate .

How humiliating... to have national media coverage of your totally unnecessary and complete mental breakdown when faced with a moderate threat level. I guess the expose anything for 15 min of fame stereotype holds true.

shameful.

Re: story on Larry King live

I recall reading a fantastic article by Richard Pyle about sharks gathering at dusk. Bumipng and running at him. I wish I could find the reference. I was great reading.

Re: story on Larry King live

I've had the pleasure of shooting video & diving with large numbers of Galapagos Sharks off Cocos Island, Costa Rica while on a trips on the Okeanos Aggressor.

At times they can be very curious and even aggressive. There were times when they actually came in and bumped us. If they really started to get into an aggressive mode we calmly exited the water.

None of us was ever "Attacked." This is just their normal behavior.

But we all know that "Shark Attack" stories always draw public interest, ever since Jaws hit the big screen.

What is really scary is to see the outlaw boats that catch these and other type of sharks with fins hung up and drying in the sun as they come into these sanctuaries to profit from these magnificent animals.

That's what should be featured on Larry King!

Richie

While there was some sensationalism in the show, all things told, I left with a favorable impression. The last part of the show emphasized shark preservation, and that part lasted a good 15 minutes or so.

Re: story on Larry King live

Hi,

Did you write to Larry King Show to explain all this thing and ask him to correct it on a next show ?

We may be need too to demonstrate and make communication about it.

I know a lot of action are made but in this case, It'll be good to make him the remark and that what he is doing is not good for the planete evolution.

May be he don't care, may be not.

Re: story on Larry King live

I've been bumped twice before, it wasn't fun but if you keep your cool and push back, they leave you alone. I can't say I wasn't scared, but I actually spent time talkng to other people who dived with sharks and read some about shark behavior and had an idea of what to expect. The Galapagos is one of the sharkiest places in the world and diving with Galapagos sharks in particular, without being familiar with their behavior, is not smart. Galapagos sharks are frequently aggressive and can be quite large and I don't think that some photographers understand how aggressive they look when leaning forward with a big camera rig while following a shark's movements. There is a real art to getting sharks to come in close without apearing aggressive. The idea of being cocky around sharks, or any large predator is just plain stupid.

Re: story on Larry King live

I've been bumped out a handful of times myself, but to call this an "attack" on national tv is extremely over-sensationalized. I agree that sex sells, BUT the facts should at least be straight. I spent the whole evening answering questions from my horrified family about whether or not what i do is safe with all of the dangerous sharks out there...
