David Shaw last dive on national TV

Just saw David Shaws last dive (footage on youtube).

This was shown on national TV a coulpe of days ago here in NZ,
however I actually hoped that they had kept in locked away. Was quite sobering to watch.

Would like to know what you guys think

should it have been screened
or not.

I am not sure myself, very tragic to watch, plus we already knew what has happend, does the rest of the world realy need to know and furtehrmore see it in such a graphic ways.

My thoughts to family and friends of David, hope they are doing well.

But these are only my .02

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

Its been available on the net for ages.... I know that doesn't help but...

And yes it it pretty sobering, I can't find it now but there is a diving page somewhere with a host of sobering clips- dead divers being recovered by ROV, self shot footage of a air diver passing out at 100mtrs solo etc....

Its very graphic stuff, but its out there already.

On the other hand you can find 1000's of files of people hurting and killing themselves on Youtube.

Are the people who vote that it should not be seen reacting to the fact its a well known diver (close to home) or the fact that its a snuff film?

I don't think you can fairly say- That should not be shown but at the same time watch the TV news of our troops gunning down Iraq's (for example)

Sorry, this isn't really going anywhere other than to say perhaps it is a pointless poll?

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

Nah show it, and bring out the Steve Irwin video while you are at it

Actually in all seriousness, I have watched that with Simon Micthell describing the systematic issue associated with the respiratory failure (oztek 07) and the pysholgical steps leading up to death and seeing, hearing and knowing what is going on as he died was a very powerful learning experience, it makes you question every thing we do on Rebreather's.

So for a lot of people it's voyeurism, but some will gain a lot from it and possibly save a life down the track

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

The poll needs a third option.

Don't show it on public TV, but don't lock it away either.

But DO show it to target audiences, like dive conferences (oztek etc), medical seminars, etc etc etc.

As Matty said, a LOT can be learned from viewing footage like this. But also agree, its probably not something the masses need to see.

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

Just watched (first time) sends a chill down the spine to think what happened next. David Shaw was wearing his own camera, this wasn't a spectator video or CCTV coverage of an accident. In a way David Shaw was using his camera for all eventualities. Good learing tool, very sad story.

I agree, wit a proper commentary to a target audiance it actually makes a lot of sense to watch.

We are a bit down under over here and the video was recently streamed on national tv, that's why the thread.

Because I thought that family and friends of David had decided to not show the video footage

cheers

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

Hi Christian,

my apologies if my response seemed harsh, wasn't my intent.
video showing diver's death - should be broadcasted? is the main thread (6 pages and closed)
Three more pages about it in Raising the Dead

The first thread is more than a year old, and I would be suprised if the video and public airing hasn't been discussed at the time on Dive-Oz or other local boards.

Lots of opinions on the subject as you can imagine, lots of useless arguing.
Just rather not start it all over again.

The accident was thoroughly analyzed and results have finally been published.
Try to get your hands on a copy, reading it will be much more worthwhile than the 9 pages I linked to above.
Accident analysis and feedback

Re: David Shaw last dive on national TV

I personally think that it can do no harm to watch this very sad footage, if each and every one of us learns something from it to aid our own safety would that not be the greatest tribute to Dave Shaw?

Dave.
