| S21 M.I.B. ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Hi all, Just to let you know that I just posted a new article on the Rebreather World library (again!). This time, it's about how to modify and adapt a Kirby Morgan m-48 FFM if you want to comfortably use it with your rebreather: http://www.rebreatherworld.com/rebre...html#post66419 Thanks to all the rebreather divers who gave me some feedback (Mike, Fred, etc). Don't hesitate to share your experience and the modifications you've done. I hope it'll help. Cheers

I have a question that those of us using FFM's might be able to answer. Do you still carry a back up mask when diving a FFM? What are the chances of a major failure of the FFM that would require going to a different mask? I am currently using the Draeger CCR paranova mask with the P port on it and have the P port reg from apex fitted to my bailout cylinder. I do currently carry a second regular mask and my bailout cylinders have regular 2nd stages in additon to the fitting for the apex 2nd. I figure that the standard 2nd stages would be for the buddy to use, or me if I had to get off the mask. On your article, I have heard from two other divers that the KM mask is rather uncomfortable, how do you feel about that?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Adapting an M-48 FFM for CCR diving Cheers Cedric! I bought this mask and it fitted my face fine. I tried to get the "nato-pod" but gave up...... Found that the longer mouthpiece that comes with the mask was way to soft and the dsv was zagging and I had to bite down on the mouthpiece to keep it close to my mouth.....thought about getting a Golem BOV but came to the conclution that it would be to heavy on the KM 48.... I decided to sell the FFM If it wold be possible to get a harder long mothpiece I am willing to have another go at it... If someone else comes up with a solution ,please let me know Will add picture of standard long mouthpiece (the soft one) Rodge Last edited by rogeringebo : 11th September 2006 at 11:34. |

Hi Ron,On your article, I have heard from two other divers that the KM mask is rather uncomfortable, how do you feel about that? No back-up mask for me! I changed the original elastic straps to a cordura-style strap: impossible to break or to lose if kicked by another diver. And because of the design of the m-48, no need to remove the mask if bailing out to OC. Comfort? Quite good. It fits my face quite well but I guess it may vary from individual to individual. See you soon. Cheers

The thread and pics is somewhere in Rebreather World try a FFM search???

And if you want to run the unit open loop, or drain excess gas when ascending, can you still do it by exhaling to the side of teh mouthpiece. I guess i am concerned how quick th epod will drain cheers christian PS Great article cedrik - well done french man, will have to meet up one day, give me a yell whenever you are down under

![]() | The M-48 seems to me like the pod is floppy and and the mask creates too much "tunnel vision" to see a HUD. Is this true? |
