Correct, with the M48, the pod and mouthpiece, everything works just like if you had a seperate regulator and mask. That is why the M48 is such a great design. You get the benefits of a full face mask with the flexibility of seperate components.

The M-48 has separate spaces for the pod (mouth) and the nose/eyes.
Most FFMs like the AGA have an oral/nasal cavitiy.

That also means that on the M-48 you can't breath with your nose, negligible as you're better of using a bite piece on any FFM with a rebreather to keep dead space to a minimum.
