Question DrMike OC 2nd p-port adapters for Drager

Mike, Jakub, or anyone with experience with these:

I ordered a few of the 'DrMike' OC 2nd stage adapters from Golem for my Apeks ATX50 2nds. One will be permanately mounted on the mask for nasal sanity breaths, and the other will be on my deep bailout bottle. I'll order more in the future.

The question is this:

The Apeks has a lip where the mouthpiece attaches. The p-port adapter is Delrin or the like and won't accept this lip. I didn't get any instructions; so, does the lip get filed off or did I get the wrong pieces? How is the fit? I'm assuming you need some kind of silicone to ensure water tightness since there is no o-ring??

Any help is much obliged.

Thanks,

Eric

Normally the lip is left and the correct adapter slides tightly over it. Did you get the apex adapter or the smaller scubapro? (I supply both to Jakub) . Personaly I use silicon sealant to seal it but some recently have had sucess with an o-ring

He must of sent me the wrong ones. I'll have to park it and send them back for replacements on Monday. Nice piece of machining though.

just check the dimensions - IIRC Apex is 39mm x 19mm (but I may be talking bol1ocks)

Hi Eric,

I tried to fit an adapter to my XTX50 when I was in Thailand in January and it wouldn't fit either. They appear to fit the older style Apeks second stages alright. I had Matt take a look at it and I ended up getting a reg fitted with an adapter of him whilst I was there.

I am not sure about filing the lip off........

Regards,

Lance

Re: DrMike OC 2nd p-port adapters for Drager

If your going to use a dremel Id recommend dremeling out the adapter to fit rather than taking away the lip. The apeks adapters I sent Jakub were made to fit TX50s style - dont know about other Apeks regs. If they are a different size they can be supplied too. Ive made them for all sorts of regs incl posiedon and scubapro, Boris and Meg DSVs too

Mike,

It looks like the shape, length, and height are correct once the lip is removed. I'll varify this more precisely when I get back from diving tonight. If this is the case, removing the very small lip should allow it to slide in with no problems. I'd hate to start gouging out the adapter, since doing that without a proper machine would be disasterous. IMHO, even with the lip removed from the regulator, a mouth piece would still work just fine if it needed to be swapped back for regular usage.

Eric

Re: DrMike OC 2nd p-port adapters for Drager

Eric,

Sorry to hear that. I think we sent you the correct adapter. The Scubapro model is much smaller.

I have tested it on all my Apex reggs (about 8) and it fit all them.
Let me know if I can help.

Jakub

Re: DrMike OC 2nd p-port adapters for Drager

Problem solved. As expected, the dimensions of the Apeks ATX mouthpiece with with lip removed matches the Drmike OC 2nd-stage p-port adapter.

I Dremel'd the lip off, etched the surface of the regulator mouthpiece port and the inside of the p-port adapter with sandpaper, cleaned it all with Acetone, and applied a liberal amount of clear marine grade silicone to both parts, and pushed them together.

While Mike's machining is precise, the Apeks machining is not. This is why I put a lot of silicone on both parts and cleaned off the excess once the parts where mated. This ensures there are no air pockets between the two parts that can contract and expand. I played around with putting a 1.25 inch o-ring between the two pieces where they seat together when mated, but without positive pressure pushing the two together, I think it is a waste of time.

I will positive and negative pressure check the newly mated pieces once the silicone is fully cured.
