There's nothing cool about something that can wipe you out quicker than you can imagine.

This particular FFM conversion was manufactured by Interspiro for military applications.

FFM's are mission specific, my advise is dont use them unless you absolutely have to. Risk assessment............

He had modified his mask. Did he modify it correctly for CCR use?? (ie did it have an internal mouthbite? or was it just a modified OC mask with oral nasal cavity?

With Rebreather use the mask must have an internal mouthbite to avoid the CO2 issues mentioned (and to stop loop flooding if mask floods)

Theres no issue with Co2 in these modern masks designed for Rebreather use. Just take a look at the KM48 the internal nasal vol is no different than a normal half mask ergo no differnce in CO2 build up risk.

I agree - when the mission is to dive using a rebreather where the risk of hypercapnia and hyperoxia is always significant then a FFM is more than justified. Dont you agree Fred?.... ...Fred?

Re: FFM's are cool but are they comfortable?

yup yup yup, what mike said, FFM on CCR is an always thing. Not to mention, but I will anyway, that its best to dive the same rig for most missions, that way if the shite hits the fan, you dont have to remember what setup you are diving and decide which bailout method will work the best.

with that said, I dont dive my CCR with FFM when I am cutting lines from props, in fact, I have the most minimalist rig you could imagine for that work, harness, tank, regulator, gauge. No BC, no extra hoses, no weight belt, nothing to get tangled up on rigging and it fits under the seat of the boat. (best part)

Re: FFM's are cool but are they comfortable?

Is there a way to adapt the mouthbites so I can keep using my comfo-bite mouthpieces? Jaw fatigue is just to high when I use other mountpieces.

Re: FFM's are cool but are they comfortable?

Drager doesnt manufacture dive gear anymore. So what will become of this mask? I dont think that it is usable in any other application... Like their non diving rebreathers.

Drager Dive has been sold to aqualung. Will they continue making this mask? I suppose they will. I also suppose I will say Drager on it because they will not want to re make the molds just to change the name...

If I buy an aqualung ffm will it be the drager ffm?

Thanks for any clarification.

Are you sure about that? Aqualung/Apeks have been distributing civilian Dräger products for some years, but manufacture is still at Dräger in Germany.

Hi Mike-

File this one under 'honestly asked ignorant questions': I've got several FFMs kicking around- heck, even a KM bandmask- from my OC days. All have oral nasal cups. Is my understanding of what you're saying above correct- that mouthbites are necessary even with the oral nasal cup?

Thanks.
Ken

I believe so for the following reasons;-

a) further reduces the dead space
b) protects loop from flooding if mask floods
c) reduces wob*

*Try it - It can be a significant difference.
