Trip Report: Wreck of the Jim Atria W/ Joe Cocozza (Pod Diver Radio): 07-20-2008

This weekend the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s had a couple of planned events, including one that was a bit out of the ordinary. On Saturday, Joe Cocozza of Pod Diver Radio (http://www.poddiver.net/) came into town to dive with us.

Joe recently completed his initial training on his new Evolution Rebreather, and decided what better way to log a few more hours then by diving with the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s. His initial plan was to dive with us Saturday and Sunday, but due to an unexpected delay, he didn’t arrive into town until Saturday afternoon. Consequently, a few of the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s met up with Joy in Ft. Lauderdale at Quarterdeck’s for an early dinner, and Joe recorded some of our conversation for an upcoming Pod Diver Radio episode.

Here’s a couple of pictures of Joe and some of the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s at Quarterdeck’s.

On Sunday, we headed over to Pompano Beach for a couple of morning dives with Avid Diver. The Avid Diver is a six-pack dive boat owned and operated by Captain Oliver. Oliver personally dives a Meg, so he’s an excellent boat captain to use for all your rebreather and technical needs, as well as recreational diving.

Here’s a few pictures of the Avid Diver.

Here’s a shot of Captain Oliver at the helm.

In attendance for today’s dive was, Joe, James (a.k.a. Monkey), Tim (a.k.a. Netmage), Eric (a.k.a. mempilot), Scott (a.k.a. Padipro) and yours truly (a.k.a. SFLDiver).

Here’s a few shots of the group as we arrived at the marina and dealt with the unloading/loading of the gear:

Also joining us was Oliver’s girlfriend, Linda. Here’s a shot of Tim and Linda before the dive.

On today’s dive, we had one Optima, three Megs and one Evolution.

Here’s Eric telling Joe all about the full face mask setup he dives.

The plan was to dive the Jim Atria, which is a 200+ foot long ship which sits in approximately 130 feet of water. It was a 30 minute boat ride out to the wreck, but fortunately, the seas were calm, so we arrived to a mild current to no current on the wreck and approximately 40 feet of visibility, which made the prospects of clear pictures quite challenging! However, here’s a few shots I took while on the wreck.

Almost immediately upon arriving on the bottom, we saw several large Tarpon circling the wreck.

The Atria has a nice amount of growth on it, which is evident in these pictures I took.

Of course the report wouldn’t be complete without a few shots of the guys underwater.

Here’s Eric coming out of the wreck wearing his full face mask and diving his Meg.

Here’s a couple of shots of Monkey diving his Meg.

Here’s a shot of Scott diving his Meg.

Here’s a few shots of Joe diving his Evolution.

Here’s a couple of shots of Tim, who was filming video while diving open circuit today, because his Meg was in Seattle for repairs/upgrades.

Here’s a few more shots of some of the guys.

After about 35 minutes on the wreck, we began our ascent to commence our deco. There’s also a few shots of Eric dealing with the anchor.

While on the line completing our deco, I took a few shots and decided to edit them into black and white for effect.

After the first dive, we did a short surface interval while Oliver navigated North to Pompano Beach, where we drifted a reef in approximately 60 feet of water. Here’s a few shots from the dive.

Here’s Monkey deploying his lift bag as he departed a bit early.

After the second dive, we headed back to the dock and unloaded the gear. At that point, Joe bid us farewell, as it was time for him to start his 26 hour drive back to New Jersey – Thanks for joining us Joe, we look forward to hearing the Podcast!

After dealing with the equipment at the dock, as is the tradition, we headed out to get a bite to eat. Today, we opted to go to Crabby Jacks, which worked out great.

Finally, here’s the picture of the group at the post meal get together.

Re: Trip Report: Wreck of the Jim Atria W/ Joe Cocozza (Pod Diver Radio): 07-20-2008

As I often get PM's from divers inquiring about the details of the underwater camera setup I use, I suspect many more divers out there reading/viewing the trip reports I post online might also be interested in underwater photography, so might therefore be curious to know what camera setup I use to take all the underwater pictures for my reports.

Throughout the last year, my camera setup has grown considerably, but it's still small compared to the size of many larger SLR based setups. I started with a smaller Sony point and shoot Camera, which I still use for my topside pics, with a single strobe, and I have since upgraded the camera and it's respective housing, added another strobe and added additional wet lenses. All my camera equipment was purchased at my local specialty underwater photography store, which happens to be an awesome resource - Thanks Reef Photo (Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros)

As the signature on my postings indicates, I'm currently using a Canon G9 advanced point and shoot camera in an aluminum Patima Housing with dual Inon Z-240 Strobes and several Inon wet lenses.

Here's a picture taken of me Sunday at the dock in Pompano Beach, Florida with my underwater camera setup in hand. This picture was taken with my Sony topside camera by Scott (Padipro) - thanks Scott!

Nice report, sorry I missed the dive. While you guys were diving here, Mark, Lisa and myself were diving in the Dry Tortugas on the Ultimate Getaway. Was a great trip and Lisa is going to do a post on it. Her writting skills are much better than mine.

Re: Trip Report: Wreck of the Jim Atria W/ Joe Cocozza (Pod Diver Radio): 07-20-2008

Thanks to Joe for coming down to dive with us SCRUBS, and thanks to Adrian for the trip report! Great pictures as usual!

I had a series of equipment problems yesterday leading up to the dive, and then during the second dive, while 'practicing' a complicated skill, I screwed up and it turned into a thumbed dive for me. I'll explain:

I've had a pesky number 2 AI cell that was getting voted out after about an hour underwater on previous dives. I put all my cells on the Narced @ 90 tester located at Fill Express in Pompano Beach (Thanks go out to Mark for providing this free of charge diagnostics tool!). The number two checked out fine on the test showing a nice linear profile and expected tolerances. I decided to buy a spare for my kit, just in case it crapped out. It would come in handy yesterday. First, I setup and calibrated my head unit the day prior to the dive. All 3 cells calibrated fine, and I packed my kit for yesterdays dive. I turned the unit on after loading it on the boat, and the number two was reading .21 in air. On the ride out, I decided to finish my predive checklist and prebreathe the unit. I switched the injection from manual to a setpoint of .4 and started to breath the loop. The number 2 went to zero. It had completely died. I luckily had the spare, and I completed a cell swap and recalibration during the ride out to the wreck. The new cell performed flawlessly on the dives.

Prior to splash on the first dive, I heard hissing coming from my bailout 1st stage. I had checked the pressure on the tank the night before and not seen any problems with the regulator. Now, it was leaking gas, and it turned out to be a crimped o-ring on a LP hose used for a whip to my BOV. While kitted up and ready to spash, I took the reg off the bottle, removed the hose, inspected the o-ring, and reassembled everything. Problem solved. My compradres were starting to wonder if I was jinxed and whether they should dive around me!

You know how things happen in threes? Well, the first dive was spectacular, other than a slight hiccup in stowing the grapnel for drift deco. The second dive would turn out to be a little different for me. I had planned on doing a FFM removal exercise on the second dive. This is a fairly complex and task loaded event, so practice is important. The Drager has a mouth bite, so even during a flood, the loop stays closed. The only two reasons to ever really remove it and don a half mask are for complete catastrophic flood where vision is hindered, or a caustic cocktail that has contaminated the mask or mouth bite. Here are the steps I briefed prior to splash to my buddy (padipro) and the videographer (netmage).

1. Identify the need to remove mask
2. Bail out to BOV
3. Retrieve spare half mask from pocket
4. Verify offboard tank pressure and deploy 2nd stage regulator/purge
5. Shutoff BOV/nasal reg gas supply from offboard bailout tank
6. Remove FFM
7. 2nd stage in mouth/purge/breathe
8. Don half mask and clear

Well, I f'd up and forgot to do step 5. Guess what happened? I got a massive free flow from both the BOV and nasal second stage in the FFM. I donned the OC second and half mask and finally got the freeflow stopped with the help of padipro. I had lost much of my OC gas supply and ascended with my buddy after giving him the OOA signal and thumbing the dive. Scott deployed his offboard regulator and had it ready to donate if was needed. I surfaced with about 400 psi. Stupid mistake. I'm headed out this afternoon to do the same drill again in 20 fsw instead of 70.

Thanks to Scott for the help! He's a great buddy. Once I was on the boat, he descended again down the drift bouy to join the rest of the group whom I'm sure were either laughing at me or shaking their heads!

All in all, the first dive was great and the second dive was a learning experience. Practice makes perfect if it doesn't kill you first!

I posted that same thing on the other thread Mem started. Self disclosure is always a good thing; before the video goes public.

Glad I could help out, sure wouldn't want to loose that rent check.

Joe, if your reading this, it was great to meet and dive with you. I think you fit in quite well with our demented group, and we look forward to diving with you again the next time you're in town.

BTW Joe said it would probably be a month before the Podcast of his visit with the SCRUBS was posted. I think it's going to take him that long to edit it and actually find something suitable for airing.

Adrian, as always, great report and pictures. Glad I could you out as well.

Well, he is going to have a hard time editing it since every conversation had something of a dig about yellow breathers in it! It was a nice 10 turn peace treaty between the Optima and Meg divers while they ganged up on the Evo for a weekend.

Oh, and the Three Holes, PA jokes were priceless! I wonder how many of them will make it into the cut?
