Trip Report: Triple Wreck Outing 05/04/2008

After some of our group went out with Scubatyme yesterday, even more of us went out today for a three hour dive. On this outing, our plan was to swim between three different wrecks that are located in 60 to 70 feet of sea water: the Tracy, the Scutti, and the Mercy Jesus, all located off of Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida.

Seas were pretty good, about two feet or so, as we broke the inlet headed toward our destination. Unfortunately, this dive was planned for dead low tide, which can significantly reduce visibility when waters from the coast wash out to see. The minute we descended to the first wreck, we in fact had the poor visibility we dreaded, a mere 30 feet or so, with lots of particulate in the water.

Of course, there were some great pranks being pulled in true S.C.R.U.B. fashion on our outing. DSix definitely deserves massive green blobs for arranging to have our divemaster put an Optima plaque on MemPilot's Meg as we geared up to splash.

MarkLaukien used this dive to show us his new Hammerhead CCR, and N2Diving was on the trip sporting his Sentinel. Of course, the six other Optimas aboard dominated the day.

For nearly three hours, we explored wrecks, swam from one to the next, and many pictures were taken. Near the end of the dive, one of my sensors failed. I tried blowing gas through the loop to dry it out to no avail. So, I thumbed the dive, our group made our ascent, and we called it a day.

After returning to dock, several of us went out for Thai and Japanese food, whereupon there was much discussion about the day's events and future planned dives.

Re: Trip Report: Triple Wreck Outing 05/04/2008

Inspite of the limited visibility, it was once again a great day of diving for the Florida S.C.R.U.B.'s! The water was warm at about 77 to 78 Degrees and the South Florida day was sunny, the wrecks were covered in growth and tons of marine life, we had a great group of divers onboard and even got to see some new rebreathers in action, and we were able to do a long 3 hour dive and see all three wrecks with limited current - What more can we ask for!!!!!!

There were some new faces onboard, as Jeff (swadiver) and his lovely wife Daniele joined us. Also, Scubatyme's very own Enzo and Divemaster Amanda joined us underwater, which was a real treat, as their usually working the deck and don't make it down with us.

Of course the highlight of the trip was Eric's unveiling of his new OptiMeg - Priceless!

After the dives, we once again returned to TJ's for great thai and sushi for dinner, which is fast becoming a S.C.R.U.B.'s favorite!

As always, here's a few pics to wet your apetite and encourage you to join the Florida S.C.R.U.B.'s for one of our future dives!

Re: Trip Report: Triple Wreck Outing 05/04/2008

My plan for this dive was to take wide angle shots of the wrecks. Unfortunately, due to the low visibility, this was not possible, so I did some close-up shots instead. I only used ambient light, since I left my strobes at home. Here are a few pictures.

As with all SCRUB dives, this was a great trip, and I enjoyed the company of a friendly rebreather dive group!

Great report and pics, Adrian and Marc both. Looks like you guys really had a slam dunk of a weekend.

Marc, if I may ask what camera are you shooting inside that Ikelite housing? You did a great job with the ambient light shots - the colors, especially the background, came out surprisingly well without artificial strobes. What ISO and white balance settings are you using? They really have an interesting look to them.

Well done all ... especially the Optimeg plant!!

I have a Canon EOS 5D with a 14mm wide-angle lens. I shot in P mode. Looking at the metadata of the pictures, I see that the camera chose ISO 200, with an exposure time ranging from 1/4 to 1/100, and an aperture between 2.8 and 5.0. I used RAW image format, and did the color correction in Adobe Lightroom.

Re: Trip Report: Triple Wreck Outing 05/04/2008

Marc and Adrian,

Awesome pictures, expecially for the high particulate conditions!

This was a very fun distraction from the normal stuff. A 2 hour and 50 minute dive for me with no decompression obligation! Simply awesome! It's amazing how much there is to see on even the smallest of wrecks when you have the time to stop and look.

We are fortunate to have so many friendly Rebreather divers and boat operators in the area to be able to put on dives like this.

What's next? Wednesday night dive?

See you guys soon!

Eric
