Trip Report: Sheri Lyn & DEMA Trader Wrecks 03/22/2008

On a not-so-pretty day in the skies, the Florida S.C.R.U.B. convened on the Big Com-Ocean for some diving off of Miami Beach, Florida. This day, our destinations were the Sheri-Lyn wreck, located in 110 feet of water, and the DEMA Trader, located in just over 70 feet of water.

Aboard were: Twayne and EDasque, visiting from Boston, along with some of the regular crew: Mike448, SFLDiver, DSix36, NetMage (as photographer and bubble watcher while awaiting clearance from his PFO repair), and myself. We were lucky this day because the winds had been blowing hard and steadily for most of the past week. However, things calmed down per the forecast, and we departed for our destination on time and at full speed over the calm ocean.

At anchor, the current was moving but not too swiftly, probably about a knot, which is good for the South Florida Gulfstream. Visibility, on the other hand, was probably only about 40 feet. There was a fair amount of particulate in the water, and the clouds overhead, producing on-and-off showers throughout our trip, kept the overall ambient light levels low. Nonetheless, we managed to pull off two nice dives over the course of the afternoon (with the exception of DSix, who sat out the second dive after having a potential cell issue).

After returning to dock, everyone went to a local pub for dining, story telling and refreshments. It is great when people come from all over the world to visit and dive with us. Make sure to let us know if you are coming to town and can join us on our dive outings; we would love to dive with you.

Re: Trip Report: Sheri Lyn & DEMA Trader Wrecks 03/22/2008

As Howard indicated, it was a pleasure to host a dive for fellow rebreather-friendly divers visiting from the Boston area. I previously met Erik, as we both started our rebreather training at Fill Express in Pompano Beach, Florida and sat through the lecture and Optima assembly portions of the course together. As for his friend Sam, it was the first time we met and he turned out to be an all-around nice guy and qualified Meg diver who recently completed his training with Mel Clark in Seattle.

Unfortunately, the visibility today was not what we have come to expect from South Florida diving and made it a bit tougher to get nice shots of the dive; however, if you follow the Florida S.C.R.U.B.'s postings, you know that we always try to share some pics from our outings with our friends out there in Rebreather World, and today is certainly no exception - So here's a few pics to give you an idea of what you can expect if you join us for a day of diving:

At some point, we're all probably guilty of allowing the excitment of a much anticipated planned dive cause us to justify making a poor decision and entering the water, even though we have a minor issue with our equipment - I know I'm guilty of that!

However, on yesterday's dive, Don (Dsix36) did the right thing and sat out the second dive, even though the issue with his cells was a minor thing and he was probably very tempted to go back in water with the group.

My hats off to you Don - Way to do the right thing and set a good example for the rest of the group!

Thanks Adrian!
You are definitely right about the urge to dive anyway.
I asked Tim how he was able to deal with being on the surface when his buddies were under water, I was going nuts (yes, worse than usual).
Even 30 min into the dive I was still thinking about suiting up and "goin' fer it".
Hey, at least I get to see your pics of the Dema Trader

Re: Trip Report: Sheri Lyn & DEMA Trader Wrecks 03/22/2008

we have a saying for those days when we get to the tip of the jetty and water is up over the bow, meaning its too rough for fishing much less diving.

"he who runs away, lives to dive another day!"

Thanks for hosting us, guys. Was good to meet y'all and check out the dives in your neighborhood.

Looking forward to coming down again soon for more! I'll still be in my drysuit, but the warm-water diving sure does feel nice this time of year :-)

Re: Trip Report: Sheri Lyn & DEMA Trader Wrecks 03/22/2008

Looks like it was a great trip. Sorry I missed it.

So, in Scott's, Tim's, and mine's abscence from the big pool with our Megs, you guys started importing Meg divers again?

It's really big of you guys to do that. Really big. I know how hard it must be for you guys to publically show the desire you have for Megs to lead the way. In true Optima fashion, that is really Red of you. So, red for all the Optima divers, on me!

I'm just kidding. I wouldn't bewish red on anyone having the whole negative 'blob' connotation and all.
