I should be available for this dive. I'm waiting to see what happens with my schedule. Put me down to reserve my spot, and I'll let you know if I have to bow out.

For all those interested in diving this wreck and all those out there in RW who may not be familiar with it, there's a short description of this wreck on the Dixie Divers website:

Shipwrecks in the Local Area

It's definitely a dive that should be on your to do list - Oh, and it's a big one!

Re: Lady go Diver Upcoming Trip: Lowrance 03/01/2008

It's been a while since I dove this wreck, but I believe the main deck is in the 165 - 170' range, and it's over 50 feet wide and 420 feet long. I'm on the list for this one.

Anyone else, besides Eric (mempilot), thinking about doing this dive on Saturday afternoon?

Re: Lady go Diver Upcoming Trip: Lowrance 03/01/2008

The weathers looking pretty nice for Saturday, the Lowrance should be a nice dive this weekend - Still time to sign up:

SATURDAY
NORTHEAST WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 2 TO 3 FEET.
INTRACOASTAL WATERS A LIGHT CHOP. SLIGHT CHANCE OF LIGHT SHOWERS.

Also, here's some more information I found on the Lowrance:

(Image courtesy of Capt. Sam Rich)
The Lowrance is one of the largest artificial reef wrecks off the Florida coast. Built in 1953 as the Ciudad de Maracaibo for a Columbian, Venezuelan and Equadorian consortium, she is 420 feet long with a 55 foot beam. Renamed several times, her last name before becoming an artificial reef was the Mazon. She had been purchased by Captain Forgarini, who had intended to fill it with scrap, sail it to Japan, and sell the lot. Unfortunately, the scrap market failed, and so did the project, resulting in a rotting eyesore and blight in the port of Port Everglades. In preparation as an artificial reef, all transverse bulkheads were breached and six feet deep open cut-outs were made in hull approximately 5 feet above the water line.

On March 31, 1984 the Lowrance was sunk in 190 to 210 feet of water. She sits upright, pointing east on a downward slope. Most of the superstructure was removed before the sinking. Still, there is significant relief with the main deck running at 165 feet of water and the upper deck coming within 150 feet of the surface.

I am still thinking more in terms of doing some drills instead. Might just go out to do something shallow for some practice.

Re: Lady go Diver Upcoming Trip: Lowrance 03/01/2008

Howard, Don is planning on diving on Sunday morning on the Lady-Go-Diver, which I think is doing two shallow dives (Sea Emporer (70') and a 60' reef drift). I'm contemplating diving Sunday as well with Don, so maybe you may be interested in that? Even though I know you are more an afternoon dive kind of guy!

Sorry about that, I did a quick cut and paste off your sight and inadvertantely failed to give credit to the AUE - Association of Underwater Explorers site (AUE: ASSOCIATION OF UNDERWATER EXPLORERS) as the source of the information.

Thank you for pointing out the oversight!

Adrian

Re: Lady go Diver Upcoming Trip: Lowrance 03/01/2008

Guys,

I'm sorry I can't make the dive Saturday. I'm stuck in Boston this evening and can't get out until mid-day tomorrow.

The good news is that I've got until the 17th of March to dive. I'm thinking I'll be doing the Dixie Divers Tech Week.

Also, Richie and possibly John are going to be down in the Keys in the next couple weeks. I may try to hook up with them. Any interest?

Eric
