Thumbs up Trip Report: 01/11-13/08 S.C.R.U.B. Key Largo Wreck Dives

What a great trip.... We got all the dives in and the weather was warm & the waters relatively calm.

Saturday on the Grove was perfect. Good vis, no current & water temps in the md 70's. Sunday we did the Duane, which I opted out of due to a ripping current, but everyone else made the dive. What can I say.... I'm a wimp!

We did the second dive on the Benwood & the Benwood Ledge. Another spectacular dive. Great vis, tons of fish, and a friendly Octopus made for a fun dive.

The other boat did the Duane & Bibb.

I've been out every day since Tuesday and have two more to go. I'm beat.

More details later and I'm sure everyone else will post. It was great meeting all the guys and we all had a great weekend.

Thanks to Eric for putting this all together. I know it was a hassle to coordinate, but it was well worth the effort.

Richie

Thumbs up S.C.R.U.B. Key Largo Wreck Trip Report

Well, that went well!

This weekend, the South Coast Rebreather Underwater Bounders hosted the second in what hopes to be a long list of all-rebreather events in South Florida. This time, the location was Key Largo, and the dives included the Spiegel Grove, the Duane, the Bibb, and the Benwood. The fifteen divers included a mix of South Florida locals and, more importantly, some VIP guest divers from the East Coast of the US, including travelers from South Carolina, Maryland, Philadelphia, and New York. Chris and Alison, owners of Silent World Diving of Key Largo, provided the two Island Hopper dive boats and crew to deliver us to our sites. Captain A.J. and Captain Bob, as well as their crews, deserve a "Job well done!" in maintaining a knowledgeable and safe operation while on the water. Their help with donning and doffing gear made for a relaxing pre and post dive kit.

The shop is located at Mile Marker 103.2 on the bayside in a small strip mall. Silent World Diving is an impeccably clean, boutique, well inventoried shop that caters to the technical dive community. Chris and Alison provide partial pressure trimix, un-boosted O2(boosted coming soon), and stages/bailout bottles of various sizes for rent. They also have a nice selection of Halcyon and other high-end/quality gear for sale and rent as well. I have no doubt that a traveling diver would find or could request just about anything and it would be accommodated. Roxy, the resident schnauzer, provides a happy greeting to all visitors to the store. I honestly think she feels she is part of the staff doing her duty to make people feel at home in this well run shop.

Each boat transported 8 and 7 divers respectively. Boat One, captained by A.J., consisted of Mempilot, Padipro, Monkey, JCDesign97, Diverreb, Eanxdiver, Amy, and Dvrstev. Boat Two, captained by Bob, was reserved for Donsix, Lakelanddiver1978, Kybrt, Seaturtle, Rustybones, Divingabe, and Lamarck79. The boats normally accommodate up to 12 recreational OC divers, so putting 8 technical Rebreather divers on each turned out to be very comfortable.

I was a little concerned about how the weather would turn out this weekend. A cold front has been pushing down from the north, but a high pressured system over the lower Caribbean kept it at bay for us. Runs out to the wrecks were between 45 and 60 minutes in light to moderate chop inside the reef. The skies were partly cloudy both days. Winds were 5 to 10 knots out of the South/Southeast, and seas outside the reef ranged from 2 feet in the morning making 3 to 4 feet in the afternoon. The current on the Spiegel Grove was very light, while the Duane and Bibb provided a sporty 1.5 to 2 knot flow. The current on the Benwood was non-existent with just a slight swell. Visibility on the Grove was about 50 feet and the Duane provided an outstanding 75 feet. Visibility on the Benwood was about 40 feet. Air temperature all weekend was in the low 80’s, while the water temp was about 74 to 76 degrees F. All in all, we couldn’t ask for better conditions in the Keys for this time of the year.

I will provide my dive report for the dives I did, and I hope others will do the same from their perspectives. A few divers managed to shoot some serious GB’s of still pictures, so I’m expecting to see the fruits of their labor here in this thread in the days to come after their long journeys home.

Day One (Friday): Travel

Padipro (Scott), and myself (Eric) drove down to the Keys Friday evening and checked into the Suites of Key Largo. The rooms at this hotel, located at Mile Marker 100, are pretty decent for the Keys. I believe it is the Best Western all refurbished. The suites have a downstairs living room with queen pull-out, bathroom, and kitchen; while the upstairs has a very large bedroom with queen bed and bath. The kitchen is nicely stocked with all the essentials, including a coffee maker and dishwasher. There is an iron and board, but for obvious reasons, this was a non-essential item. Both sleeping areas have nice size televisions, and the free internet is high-speed wireless. The only downside of this hotel is that all the rooms are located on the second floor due to the parking spaces below under the raised building. Lugging the gear up and down could get old if staying long-term.

Day Two (Saturday): Check-in/Spiegel Grove

The shop opened at 8 am promptly, and all divers were there on time for check-in. Chris understandably checks cert cards for technical qualifications. After the necessary paperwork was completed, the divers departed for the boat, which is located just north of the shop on the East side of the island. There is plenty of parking near the boats, and the shop maintains an air fill station, wash rack, and clean bathrooms for it’s clientele there. After a thorough briefing, the boats departed for the all-day dip on the Spiegel Grove, a 500-foot long Naval Landing Craft Tender sank as part of the artificial reef program in 135 fsw in the John Pennekamp State Park. What can I say about this wreck? It’s awesome! The two boats tied into the mooring buoys at separate ends of the wreck.

Padipro, Monkey, and myself splashed on the stern and started forward through the well deck at about 100 fsw. We were diving 21/35 DIL and bailout, with a team combo of OC deco gas consisting of ean50 and O2. Our planned maximum runtime based on OC requirements was 133 minutes. We were exploring the dark cavernous bowels of the well deck under the overhang when Monkey’s Universal Rebreather Monitor started displaying bad information. His HUD shut down and the primary displayed what was believed to be an erroneous radically dropping PO2; however, the secondary tri-gauge was still providing ‘normal’ PO2 readings for all three sensors. Monkey thumbed his dive, and Padipro and I escorted him back to the upline. Once Monkey was safely on the line with other divers from our boat descending down to him, we turned and started forward again. We decided to limit our runtime to a planned 100 minutes at this point.

Scott and I crossed over to the starboard side of the well deck and moved into the machine shop about midship. Here, we dropped through a hatch into the well deck and entered the corridor that runs the length of the boat through a doorway on the gangway. We initially started aft, but ran out of interesting things to keep our interest. We turned around and headed forward through the narrow corridor, exploring small rooms along the outside hull as we went. We found the head (bathroom) in the forward starboard section of the boat, and then we exited the main structure out onto the bow. The VR3’s at this point were showing dive time + time to surface of 93 minutes, so we decided to move aft along the port outside hull back to the upline. We passed the turrets and winches, and joined the upline along with several other divers from our boat. We completed 30 minutes of deco in total comfort. Again, the crew took our bottles from us while at the back of the boat, making entry on the ladder easier.

The 90 minute surface interval was used to eat the provided lunch, re-hydrate, relax, and let the crew swap ends of the wreck with the other boat. Monkey’s day was done with his equipment problems, and dive two was not without problems for Scott and I either. One month ago, both of us tested our sensors on the Narced@90 tester located at Fill Express. While all sensors for both of us provided good linearity on the tester, some of the sensors were showing weak on the pre-dive calibration. Upon descending to the bow for dive two, Scott had major problems with one sensor climbing in PO2. After multiple DIL flushes, the sensor initially came down, but the PO2 never held close to the correct PO2 for depth. With only two good sensors left and voting logic out the door, Scott thumbed the dive after only about 10 minutes. We surfaced and he opened his head expecting to see a wet membrane. While there was moisture, it wasn’t too abnormal. He dried out the sensor carriage, and we decided to try again. After returning to the bow again, the same problem persisted. Thumb. We called it a day with three, all be it two of them short, dives on the Grove. It was still a great day of diving!

Day 3 (Sunday):

Since Scott was replacing the bad sensor and a weak one, I decided to replace my two weak ones. We purchased a pack of four sensors provided by Monkey and the Rebreather World Store. I should mention that Monkey did a great job of providing consumables and replacements for both boats. Awesome service, dude! With strong mV readings and ambition to have more great dives, we split for the USS Duane. The Duane is a 300-foot Coast Guard Cutter sank with it’s sister ship, the USS Bibb, in 120 fsw. The Duane sits upright, while the Bibb lies on her side. The current was ripping on this site, so it was a fight to get down on the wreck. After the long pull down to the bow, we took a well needed breather to keep from taking a CO2 hit. We drifted aft along the starboard side of the Duane, entering the main structure when able. At one point, we swam down a long corridor that serves the central part of the main deck. About halfway back, there is a room where the floor plating is corroded away from the support beams. While I have slid down through these tight opening in the past on OC gear, we decided not to remove our bailout and deco bottles on this dive to get through the hole. Exploration below decks would have to wait for another dive on another day. We exited the structure and continued entering rooms from the outside along the way to the stern. When Scott decided to ensure his bailout regulator was pressurized, he turned the valve and the 1st stage o-ring failed. With no deep bailout available from his tank, we thumbed the dive and started up. The Jon lines came in handy for the relatively short deco obligation. The strong current had us rippling like flags. This dive was a good one, but could have been less fun with a long deco on the line.

On the boat during the surface interval, Scott changed the o-ring and we ate lunch. The group decided not to fight the current on the Bibb, so we moved to the Benwood. The Benwood collided with another vessel while running lights out due to German U-Boat activity off the coast of Florida during WWII. Her crew ran her aground in shallow water to keep from loosing the crew. The Navy used the Benwood for aerial gunnery practice, so it is now a broken up hotel for fish in about 50 fsw. Scott and I planned to drop on the wreck, then move south to deeper water over the ledge of the reef. The ledge drops to about 80 fsw here, and the reef runs for a long way. There are a lot of cool sponges and formations to see here, and while I’ve been on the Benwood many times in the past, this was the first time I ventured away from the wreck. It was well worth it! We enjoyed a nice leisurely quiet dive and were visited by a medium sized loggerhead turtle that curved it’s path around us in a curious manner. I will let someone from the other dive teams talk about their encounter with the large octopus! Damn it! We missed it!

On the turn, I tried to trace our reciprocal heading, but missed by about 50 yards. Back to Advanced Open Water 201 for me! Along the way, I stopped to, um, relieve myself through the valve. My prone position in the water scared the crap out of Scott who thought I was tonic. Oops! I should have signaled him first! My bad! Like I said, I led us too far North by about 50 yards and we had to surface to find the boat. We took some ribbing from the other divers for that one; something about the Megalodon not having a built in GPS like the Optima! The run back in was filled with stories about the great time we had this weekend and future plans for dives in the North.

I want to thank everyone for making this a safe and memorable event! I apologize for not making it out for the festivities on Saturday night. My jet lag from my trip over the pond was messing with my ability to read beer labels. I had a great time, and even though some dives were thumbed, it was all good in my mind. Better to thumb and dive another day, than not thumb and risk an incident or accident. I hope all the divers find their way home safely, and that we all meet again for another great weekend of diving!

PS. I can't wait to see all the great pics, especially those of the Octopus I missed!

Doug,

Sorry you couldn't make this trip; however, I know of your very important duty to attend to while we were away at play. Glad to know you are the one doing it.

I believe you know Bob and Amy, and obviously Justin. We had a great time with everyone this weekend!

We hope you will be able to join us on the next one!

Ask the wetsuit divers that were shivering on the line at the end of the deco.

Several hours a day in 76 deg water gets you cold unless you wear a thick wetsuit, and that has it's disadvantages too.

Some of the NorthEasters wish they had brought theirs.

Re: Trip Report: 01/11-13/08 S.C.R.U.B. Key Largo Wreck Dives

just got home and i have to work tonite but i just wanted to thank everybody who set things up and stuff. i had a good time and some good dives as well as an educational moment.

First day we did the grove we tied in admidship, buddied with lakeland divers finest, we swam around all was good. nice lunch then we splashed for a second after they moved the boat to the stern crane mooring. this dive we swam to the bow and back, true story. maybe i was too tired i dont know, but i got good and winded, started to feel real shitty and spent a few moments deciding and then said **** it and bailed out right at the mooring. nowhere near as smooth as switching to a deco bottle when oc, but i managed to get it out and going. Lakeland and Seaturtle were all over me in a flash w/ regs but i was ok, maybe after a minute i was ok, then thinking how a bov really would have simplified that whole CF. went back on the loop at 15 fsw then ran out of dil finally just got out of the water. went back to the suites< man i wish my normal living quarters were as nice as that place>and got a good nites sleep , next day i was fine. did bibb and then duane, nice dives w/ no problems.

i dont know when ill have the time to get back down but i sure would like too soon. thanks for having me.
