![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Trip Report: Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s 11/30 3-Wreck Extravaganza On November the 30th in Pompano Beach, Florida, Rebreatherworld’s own Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s hosted an event yielding a rarely seen sight. What was billed as the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s Rebreather 3-Wreck Extravaganza resulted in a grand total of 14 rebreather divers (8 Optima’s, 3 Meg’s and 3 Kiss’) all on the same dive boat! And perhaps an even more unusual sight spotted aboard, were the two female rebreather divers – how often do you see that happen!! The trip was conceived entirely as a result of postings on Rebreatherworld by a few divers looking to do some late November diving in South Florida. Once the open invitation went out to the Rebreatherworld community via a formal posting on the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s section of the site, that’s all it took to get divers excited about signing up for this event. The Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s have had success in arranging local dive trips via postings on their group’s section of the site’s forum. The divers met for the 10:00 AM departure at the Sands Harbor Marina in Pompano Beach, Florida, where the 36’ Newton dive boat, Scubatyme, awaited to take the group out to dive 3 South Florida Wrecks. The 3 dive trip consisted of three back-to-back dives on the Wreck of the Jim Atria (132’), the Wreck of the Rodeo 25 (125’) and the Wreck of the Captain Dan (110’). The thought of using rebreathers to dive three nice wrecks in calm and warm November seas was certainly enough to create anticipation about the trip. However, in spite of the great diving conditions, the opportunity to interact with thirteen other divers who shared each other’s passion for rebreather diving was the true highlight of the activity. From the first moment divers started arriving at the dock, hand shakes and bright smiles were everywhere. Most of the divers had previously interacted via postings on Rebreatherworld, but had yet to meet face-to-face; consequently, after introductions ensued, the most common question was, “What’s your username?” When that question failed to result in a familiar identification, the next question seemed to immediately be, “What’s your avatar?” which was immediately followed by, “Ok, now I know who you are!” After all the gear was loaded aboard the boat and plenty of prideful banter over rebreather brands being used by each diver was dished out, the boat left the dock as scheduled and headed up the Florida Intracoastal for the Hillsborough Inlet, which is the local doorway to the sea in Pompano Beach. To say the seas were calm would be an enormous understatement, because there was, at best, one foot seas the entire day. The water temperature was a bit warmer than it usually is this time of the year, at approximately 77 to 78 degrees, however, where were still a few drysuits seen onboard. Visibility on the wrecks was the only factor that one could say was not in our favor. Compared to most of the world, South Florida divers are a bit spoiled, so some might say that the divers had no right to complain about the 40 to 60 foot visibility conditions throughout the dives. The currents varied a bit on the three dives, but all-in-all, they were in the range of medium to mild in nature. Rather than go into the details of each of the sites the group dove during the trip, here’s a link to a site containing detailed information about each wreck, as well as information on many other South Florida wrecks (http://www.dixiediver.com/shopping/shopcontent.asp?type=wreckdive). The group completed approximately 30 to 40 minutes of bottom times on each of the wrecks and run times in the area of 50 to 70 minutes, with required decompressions being completed on the anchor line, which at times was a bit reminiscent of packed subway riders commuting into New York City. As is usually the case when you bring a group of divers together, before the dives, during the dives, during the surface intervals, and after the dives, all the divers appeared to be sharing good times together,. The shared time also gave the divers the opportunity to swap ideas and tips about unit configurations, as well as the obligatory talk of future potential trips. After the dive, a group of the divers went to dinner at, what appears to be evolving into the Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s post dive restaurant of choice, Bonefish Mac’s, which as usual, was a perfect end to the evening. The trip also appeared to be very well documented, as there was no lack of photographers and videographers aboard. There was even topside documentary type video footage being taken of the trip, so hopefully some post editing will ensue and a posting of the completed video will be added to this thread. Attached are a few pictures I personally took of the activity, but given the caliber of the photographers that joined the group for this trip, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some amazing shots being posted to this thread in the near future. So next time you see a Florida S.C.R.U.B.S.’s event posted, add your name to the list and join the group for some great South Florida diving, you will not regret it! And if your from out of town, buy yourself a plane ticket, pack the rebreather in a suitcase and come dive South Florida, as some of the divers on this particular trip did.

| My unit can beat up yours Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Trip Report: Florida S.C.R.U.B.’s 11/30 3-Wreck Extravaganza My hat's off to Adrian for his excellent trip report and photos - great job documenting the success of the trip, start to finish. I'm still on the west coast of Florida and probably won't be able to edit/post my photos until later in the week, but as Adrian said I'm sure there will be an ample supply of great shots. There's not much I can add to the that quality report, other than to say that I am thrilled to have been a part of the day. It was great to meet everyone in person, put faces with names and of course you get a much better perspective of people in real life. Certainly the conditions and diving were just great - we really lucked out for this time of year. And a rebreather-only charter with 13 other units onboard was definitely a first for me. I found it particularly funny on the anchor line coming up from the first dive - all 14 of us packed together on the shallower stops (like an OC cattle boat trip in the summer time!) but hardly a bubble in sight and of course perfectly managed with everyone paying attention and accomodating everyone else.Of course I would like to thank everyone for making it an excellent trip, but in particular Adrian (sfldiver), Don (Dsix36) and Eric (mempilot) for generously lending me tanks and a drysuit to make my travel logistics easier; and also Enzo and Capt. John of the Scubatyme for running an excellent charter. I am already looking forward to diving with everyone again either in south Florida or if we get some travel destinations lined up. Thanks and hope to see everyone soon!

Eric, that was not the only exception made that day - In spite of the fact that those of us who dive Scubatyme regularly have unofficially designated it an exclusive Dive Rite Optima zone, we made an exception and allowed a few Megs and Kiss's on board for the trip; however, we did make most of them sit in the cheap seats! LOL!!
