MY Stolen VR-3

OK guys:

Last summer (late) my VR-3 went missing off the boat. I knew all the guys and gals on the charter the last day I saw it, and know that none of them took it. So... I was just baffled.

Until yesterday.

On the boat down here in NJ, a guy walked up to me and asked if I was from Rhode Island. So, naturally I said "Yes" and we started talking. Seems he was ripped off last fall by a guy from RI who advertised a VR-3 on Ebay and who took the cash and then never sent the VR-3 to him.

Why?

Probably because it has my name on the startup screen, as well as a distinctive bright blue anodized aluminum battery cap (as well as not being grey hard-coated but is bright aluminum, as my STOLEN VR-3 was a prototype given to me by Kevin G)

Stolen by who?

Seems that the guy who ran the auction is someone who worked at the dive shop in RI where I hang out, and is someone who would have casually come down to the boat to say "Hi" now and then. Apparently the VR-3 sitting on the box drying with my other gear was just too-lonely and went home with him. I know exactly who it is, and have all of the emails between he and the guy who 'bought' the VR-3 on Ebay, and there's zero doubt at all. He was a friend... you are always hurt by the people you trust.

Why am I writing this?

ANYONE who bid on EBay for a VR-3 about last Sept/Oct/Nov from a guy in RI ought to let me know so I can work with the authorities here. My bet is that this guy ripped off as many people as bid, then never shipped the computer to anyone due to the "Dave Sutton" on the startup screen.

To say I am pissed is an understatement.

Dave

Re: MY Stolen VR-3

The creep who stole your computer would be a good candidate for speargun practice! Or better yet, clamp his hands in a vise and break his fingers one at a time with a pair of channel locks!
Hope you find your computer, Dave. I had one hijacked in a similar fashion a few years back. Not a VR3, but it still left me in a bind.
I fleabay often, so I'll keep an eye out. FD

C'mon! We are civilized people! In that kind of situations my wife's hair curling iron and a jar of Vaseline will work miracles.

BTW Dave, do You remember an incident of a missing wallet on our charter?

PS. Trade mark notice. Curling iron trick is imported "From Russia with Love"

Re: MY Stolen VR-3

Ah, let bygones by bygones. Take him diving. Grab your 'breather, him, and jump in the drink. There must be a nice pier closeby to do some 'exploratory' diving...

This sort of promise seems to work wonders on the 12 year old thieving assholes around some of our dive sites!

But seriously, I hope you can arrange for his reward.

Hi Tomek! Long time no see. See any sharks lately?

I think I'll invite him for a dive... then raise the ladder.

I don't remember a missing wallet on your charter, but the criminal was not there that day.
I never found anything, so . Cannot blame this on him

(Ah Shit: I'll blame it on him anyway).

Re: MY Stolen VR-3

(just being mean here, not to be taken seriously)

Ahh come on guys, let be nice here. Just invite him on a Nice Deep Wreck (200 feet at least) dive where you want to lift something with a lift bag to bring it to the surface. Some how he manages to get tangled in the bag as it going up. If he is lucky, he has a real nice case of bends to remind him not to touch others dive gear.

I smell some sarcasm in that statement.
Where I am diving, I am lucky if I can see oxy arc at the end of my hand.

Take him for the shark dive, tight the chum bucket to your guest of honor(make sure it is a good knot this time) and observe.

What I don't get about your hypothesis is why these are necessarily the same people.

All a bad seller needs is a few pics of a VR3 and the balls to "sell" it and run. They don't need actual possession of a unit.

Still, it's definitely worth getting together people who were ripped off and closing down the scammer. The payment should be trackable, nd the cops will be a lot more interested if there are multiple cases of fraud. I just wouldn't hold my breath about recovering your stolen unit!
