Re: PFO Video

Brett,

I had mine closed end of 2002 - no big deal.

Biggest problem was that I couldn't sleep for a couple of weeks after the operation - I missed the 'noise' I was used to hear - which was in fact my heart murmer

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: PFO Video

Forgive my anatomical igonrance but are you saying that huge flap in the middle that keeps spraying bubbles into the top chamber is your PFO?

Cheers

Re: PFO Video

Pelagian,

The view shown is essentially only of the left heart. The atrium is at the bottom and the ventricle is at the top. The flap you refer to is the mitral valve which separates left atrium from left ventricle.

Unfortunately, the right heart is only just visible on the left hand side of the picture. If you look very carefully you will see that it is almost "opaque" with bubble contrast (ie, full of small bubbles) much of the time, although you can seen the bubbles arrive there in bursts (corresponding with their injection into a peripheral vein) if you watch carefully. Two or three times some bubbles come shooting across a small defect in the wall which separates the left and right atria (bottom left of the image). This is reasonably clearly seen at about 30 sec during the recording. This is the PFO. These bubbles almost immediately shoot across the mitral valve and into the left ventricle. I presume these events were precipitated by a valsalva manoeuvre of some sort.

Hope this helps.

Simon

Re: PFO Video

List,
Interesting subject, something that we have been talking about here lately. I am scheduled to take some preliminary tests tomorrow morning and will have the PFO tested on the 28th. I do not think I have it actually more interested to see how it is done.

Re: PFO Video

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the feedback. I have what i hope to be my final check-up this afternoon. It was originally diagnosed in June 04, and i had my first op in Nov 04. When they finally went in they found three holes and managed to plug just two. I had another op in Oct last year. Believe it or not, this is after the first op. On the first sounding at my first appointment the chamber just went comletely white with bubbles.

You just never know. I had been diving for eight and a half years before this happened. I worked in Oz and NZ for 5 years and did up to five dives a day and never had aby trouble. Back in the UK it was only when i started to do the deeper stuff that it started to cause concern.
