However, if we promote that concept to its logical conclusion, then it is the beginning of the end of diving as we know it. The industry would collapse under the financial weight of all prospective students having to have bubble contrast echos prior to learning to dive. Not something to be avoided if it was justified, but remember, PFOs are prevalent (about 30% of divers have them), but DCS remains a relatively rare event (maybe 1:10,000 dives) and serious DCS is considerably less common still.

Sorry for the tangent, but does anyone know if the people involved in Bhulman and Haldane's testing were screened for PFOs?

I am pretty sure it was on their pre-assessment questionaire.

No. Definitely not.

You're certainly not the first person to follow this line of reasoning. I'm guessing you're thinking that their population of test divers must have included a proportion of people with PFOs? And therefore their results apply to an unselected population of divers who have not been tested?
