Those whom mock the dread otitis externa...beware the curse.![]() Any idea if this sort of thing lasts a long time? Prepare yourself for a Looonnnnggggg and frustrating journey. I too have the same infliction, since Sept 9th or slightly earlier. It seems that most GP's (or should I dare to say DP's?) have no bloody clue as to how to treat OE. Save yourself the agony, get a referral to a SPECIALIST, or have your GP take a culture to find out if it is bacterial or fungal prior to the myriad of treatments (Four so far) Oh...and, should I also be so brash as to state the obvious...stay out of that cursed slough from which you caught the bug. I have not learned after the second year straight. (it took 6 months to cure it last year.)

| Waiting... ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: My ear hurts. Back in early 2000, I had a problem with my ears, in that i kept getting an outer ear canal infection every time i dived. Saw three GP's, had three different "remedies" (2 lots of ear drops, one lot of antibiotics), all of which "fixed" the problem, till i went for another dive... All 3 docs also gave me a different length of time to get back in the water... from 1 week to 4 weeks... After a VERY frustrating 4 months (3 dives...), I ended up seeing one of the doctors from the local hyperbaric unit, who also works as a GP in his spare time... after telling him the prob, and what had been done, his first comment was "well, they've obviously been guessing, lets see what the problem really is", so he took a swab, from each ear, sent it to the labs, to get tested... Turns out, it was a nasty bug called Pseudomonas (SP) which doesn't usually occur in the ears... the doc had to call canberra to get permission to prescribe the drugs i needed to get rid of it... was fine within a fortnight... Moral of the story, if you got a diving problem, see a GENUINE diving doctor... ie, call the local hyperbaric unit, and get a recommendation from them. (by the way, this is a copy and a paste of a post I made on diveoz a few years back)
