You can tell them I sent you.
If you do opt for surgery, you may regret that you hadn't tried this mask first because if your eyesight is perfect you would have to wear contacts to use it!
Another issue you might want to discuss with your surgeon, is the incidence and effects of hyperoxic myopia. (Perhaps an informal survey of those that have had the procedure might be of some insight.)
Regards,
Gabriel
So let me get this straight...

You want me to pay $215 for a mask, that will require me to wear contact lenses in order to see properly (I have 20/20 and I'm not in my 20's anymore). You're also going to sell me some birth control glasses, with sexy clip on shades, so that I can see properly between dives for another $110. I would guess that a trip to the opthamologist is going to be in order to fit those contact lenses too.

Sounds like an awful lot of screwing around to me. I think I'll stick to my maintenance and hassle free, $45 flat mask thank you.

Not mention looking like a complete dork wearing those "masks"...

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

I had a no-touch Laser PRK done to both eyes about 1.5 years ago. I was cleared to dive within two weeks, because there was no incision to rupture from pressure. Infection was not a concern, because, no incision, etc.
The procedure does take longer to 'set' than LASIK - although I could see better immediately, I went from very nearsighted to a bit farsighted, which settles down to 20/20 after about 30 days. I could legally drive within 5 days.
Diving has not been a problem since in any way.
Go for it! No more lost or moving contacts at 180'...no coke bottle dive mask. You can see your toes in the shower - I still get excited!

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

I had my eyeballs done about 4 years ago.

I did it mostly for surface vision, but also to get rid of the prescription lenses in my mask. Hard to borrow a spare mask if you need a script in it!

I had a procedure done called "mini mono vision" they did one eye for distance and the other for near. It took about 2 weeks for my eyes to become fully adjusted (and my brain to recognize the changes).

It was 4 weeks to my checkup and then OK'ed to dive.

I would not hesitate to do it again and tell anyone that wears glasses that they should look into it themselves.

In the last year I have been needing to use reading glasses. The doc tells me this is my age and I needed them 12 years ago too.

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

Depending on your level of nearsightedness (-diopter) Your FOV with a prescription mask is superior to someone with 20/20 and the same mask.
I am roughly a -7.0 and have dived contacts as well as a prescription mask. the difference is amazing. By my calculations the standard 25% magnification is eliminated with my optical mask. Funny thing is I'd love to do the surgery but being nearsighted and corrected underwater is enough of a visual advantage I'm willing to put up with glasses on the surface. Granted I don't have the FOV of the Hydro optics bug mask but it's still better than normal. I guess my point is be aware that your FOV will decrease when you are corrected and no longer have lenses in your mask. This effect is only valid for myopic people with corrective masks and increases with the power of your diopter.

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

I had Lasik done on both eyes over 4 years ago, I wasn't diving then but it was a good 4 weeks before things had healed up and settled down, I have better than 20/20 normal vision but am starting to get a bit long sighted so I use those stick on lens inserts in my normal masks to read my computer etc. No hassle

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

I had Laser (no touch) 1 year ago and I'm very glad I did it. I've had zero vision problems however I didn't use the drops as much as I should and developed very small bubbles under one lens flap. It was no problem and went away as soon as I listened to my Doctor and followed his directions but my Doctor (also a experienced OC diver) said to wait a month before any real diving, 2 before deep deco dives. He also told me to wait at least two weeks before even getting back into the pool.

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

I had LASIK surgery about five years ago.The procedure went fine and i got better then 10/10 vision on both eyes without a single sideeffect. I was cleared to return to the water a month later.
A year after the surgery i had a very bad basketball accident when someone accidentally punched me in the eye. The hit was quite strong and i got a big haetoma on my right eye and the flap that had been removed for the surgery had moved a bit. I had it fixed and returned to diving and swimming a month later.
Have had no problems of any kind since and i would definetely do the surgery again if i had to.

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

mrs vid's vision was -11.0 and -10.5

She had the laser treatment 5 1/2 years ago - which was invasive. Her doctor suggested that she stay out of the water (including the pool) for 4-5 months, which she did (she left it to the winter).

She also stuck to all of the other advice that was given to her.

Her friend at work and a separate friend of ours both had treatment, ignored the doctors advice and then had problems from diving - bubbles, infection etc!

I understand that with modern non-invasive laser treatment you should be out of the water for 4-8 weeks max. DON'T IGNORE THEIR ADVICE!

Let us know how you got on

vid

PS mrs vid went to 20/20 and it's only just starting to fail again (although the old gal's getting on a bit now )

Re: Laser corrective eye surgey and diving?

Campbell, i had lasix done 8 years ago. the only issue i notice and more so with diving is dry eyes, and this really is not too bad. if i remember correctly i had way worse dry eyes when i was diving OC; now on CCR its not too bad at all. the first year was the worst, good luck. i would do it again if needed!
